The Bath and the elephant
Discuss ways in which two stories show characters trapped in a situation, without the possibility of escaping of it
In both stories, ‘The Bath’ by Janet Frame and ‘Elephant’ by Raymond Craver the main characters are trapped because of their loneliness and helplessness. Both of them are imprisoned and cannot found the way to escape from their reality. They are trapped but because of different things and in different parts of their lives.
In the case of “The Bath” she is trapped in her old age and she cannot go out of their because of the lack of company and help. She explores the “terror” and “torture” of the old age. Climbing out of the bath is a major obstacle. The fear of making a mistake is very much there on her mind. She wants to get over it by inventing all sorts of excuses to stay in the bath for some more time. It's a fear encrusted far into her mind. Nobody help her to escape from the bath, “no one in the house or the street or Dunedin or the world knew that she was imprisoned”. The author uses the terms “cold passageway” and “tunnel” to emphasize the idea of being trapped. She compares the sensation of being walking in a close place as a tunnel with the sensation of being trapped in your own age. Her fear of not being able to climb out of the bath is so big that she doesn´t lie or lean back to bathe, she only sits upright. This can be a metaphor to say that she does anything to escape of her situation because she is afraid of stay trapped forever in the attempt of doing it.
In the case of “The elephant” he is trapped in his past mistakes and he cannot go out because he is afraid of being alone forever and because he feels guilty for what he has done. He is manipulated by other and by himself. The idea of being trapped without way out is emphasize during the entire story with a repetitive pattern. This pattern forms a circle and never finish since he cannot day no. He is being oppressed. He is trapped by his past mistakes and guilt and by the

In our discussion on Friday, no one else read the book so I was stuck trying to piece together what they knew, what happened in the book, and how to write a decent report on what has happened so far. So far in the book, we read about Jacob living in the retirement home and coming in contact with a fellow who claims he carried water for elephants. Elderly Jacob flashes back to when he was twenty-three. His parents had just died in a car accident; he skipped out on his veterinarian final exam, and hops a train out of Norwich in hopes of finding work somewhere new. The train is for the “Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show on Earth”. He joins the circus, does a variety of petty jobs until he lands in the circus…

The extended visual metaphor of the girl sitting in the bottle conveys the idea of her feelings trapped inside. The protagonist is shown sitting in the bottle which connects to the idea of a ‘message in a bottle’. It is common that ‘messages in a bottle’ are lost and never found. Responders assume that she feels her thoughts and ideas are trapped inside and will not ever be discovered. The bottle is open however meaning that if she works hard and breaks through the barriers she can find an escape from the darkness that surrounds her.…

The poem provides many analogies that could represent the feeling of entrapment. For example Raine says “Model T is a room with the lock inside—a key is turned to free the world”. Raine is making a reference to the martian being confused and doing everything backwards compared to a human. Raine even makes mention of some sort of hauntings as he mentions ghost cries and creepy sounds that wake you up. Even more he talks about time going by as your tied to the wrist and “ticking with impatience”. It is amazing how confused the Martian is, he is trapped in a deeper meaning wanting to be free. At the end Raine provides his audience with something very interesting. He uses an analogy where the Martian is comparing the bathroom to a prison by saying it is a punishment room with only water. This really sets off an idea that Raine could possibly be referencing a prison in his poem.…
