The Athlete Rachael Shields
My name is Rachael Shields and I am 17 years old. My life has been characterized by experiences on the farm, and the work ethic that comes along with it. I’ve learned to appreciate the outdoors and wide-open spaces; some of my favorite activities include skiing, snowboarding, geocaching, and playing with my dogs. In addition, I’ve spent all 4 years of high school on the Varsity Cross Country and Soccer teams. As far as soccer goes, I’m extremely passionate about my current position as goalkeeper. In order to be the best I can be, I train every chance I can get all year round. And in Michigan, where the weather is unpredictable, that can sometimes be difficult. So when the weather isn’t cooperating, outdoors I love reading, drawing, and working on computers. My love of outdoors also includes a love of travel. I jump at the chance of a road trip. Some of my favorite family trips have included; Hawaii, Maine, California, Colorado, and South Dakota.
Farm life has also exposed me to 4-H and FFA. In 4-H, I learned showmanship, commitment, hard work, and much about responsibility. I showed steers, hogs, sheep, rabbit, and dogs. I’ve showed animals for 6 years and I would have to say my favorite experiences in 4-H would have to be showing my dog, Mocha. With Mocha, I was able to earn Grand Champion Agility Dog and Reserve Champion Dog Showman. Over the years I’ve also earned Champion Market Ewe, Champion Sheep Showman, and 1st place Market Steer.
In FFA, I held several officer positions and participated in many community volunteer activities. Officer positions have included: Historian, Sentinel, and Reporter. Some Volunteer activities I’ve done include: Christmas Basket Food Drive, Wise Farm Clean-Up, Pumpkin Carving, and Spring BBQ and Plant Sale. In FFA I’ve also participated in State 3 years in a row for Prepared Public Speaking. Not only did I learn a lot of self-confidence, I learned research and interpersonal skills as well. This is definitely something that

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

At an early age, I began preparing for the Houston Livestock Show, being that I am 5 years younger than my brother and I followed in his footsteps. I loved being in the barn with him and my parents, I would practice driving my hog just like my brother did. He is, and has always been, my biggest critic. Over time, I participated in clinics to learn how to show my hog to the best of my ability. I also participated in honorary shows before I was old enough to actually show in the county show and major livestock shows. Through the years I have learned how to care for the best species in the Houston Livestock Show, hogs. Learning how to feed and care for my hogs was a process; I had to learn when to feed them, what to feed them, and how much; and if they…

I have volunteered at a local hospital since my sophomore year of high school. I received a wide range of opportunities, from meeting family members at different areas of the hospital, to volunteering in the emergency room, to also giving comfort to families in the hospice. In addition, I am very culturally oriented and try to be active in the Indian community. Every summer, I volunteer at an Indian Saturday school which I have attended since kindergarten. I teach students the Indian customs and Hindu religion, as well as how to further their reading and writing skills in Sanskrit. I was responsible for these children for a whole week, and took care of them as if they were my siblings. I spend my free time teaching kids how to do Indian classical dance. I love being active and able to give back to my community as much as I can, and I would love to broaden my experience throughout the…

Yes, volunteering teaches you social skills and it looks good on a resume, but none of that stuff matters if you don’t have a good character. Your character is something that you can’t get rid of, but you can change. Volunteering can change you into a more patient, loving, and smart individual. In the past I’ve volunteered for the Carl Perkins Center, which deals with children who have been abused. Working with these children showed me how blessed I am. It made me more thankful, for my parents and family members. I made it my job to make those children happier than they were when I walked in. By the time I left I was the one who was more affected. Those children didn’t care about worldly things; all they wanted was your attention. This showed me that the gift of time is sometimes the best gift a person can…

I have been an assistant teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Acolyte leader. These positions have included teaching a small group of children from the age of three to ten about Jesus and being an altar helper or Acolyte. I have learned compassion working with these children that you cannot get anywhere else. Also at my church, I have gone on four mission trips. On these trips, I have done everything from making beds at a homeless shelter to setting up a firework tent during a thunderstorm. Through mission trips I have been given a servant’s heart and a love for serving.…

My story began 6 months ago, I was called to do a soccer tryout, with the chance to earn a spot and a scholarship to play Soccer in United States. I do not know how often those things happen, but for me it was like a dream coming true. After talking with a few coaches, Zach Mills, our coach, gave me the opportunity to come here. I was not sure of, where I was going, or what I was going to find, nevertheless I trust in his word, and he brought me to a great place. I do not regret any choice that I took in the pass, because every step that I took before make me who I am today.…

I feel confident when interviewing because I am so used to speaking to “judges.” I understand how to portray myself in the most positive way because 4-H has also helped me value my skills as an individual. 4-H has also helped me succeed in my academics because I understand the importance of hard work when it comes to success. Through my activities in 4-H, I learned how to persevere, despite the difficulties or obstacles I have to overcome. I also learned how to effectively manage my time. Finally, 4-H has helped me develop positive relationships. While in 4-H, I stepped out of my comfort zone many times to meet new people, and that skill has continued to develop while in…
