The Age Of Discovery: 15th And 16th Century
The Age of Discovery began in the 15th and 16th century, when the European countries searched for new routes to East Asia and discovered the New World of the Americas, which had shortened the distance between Asia and Europe. Dutch traders occupied South Taiwan in 1624 and intended to use it as a trade base with Japan and China. In 1626, Spanish troop established their force in Northern Taiwan but was driven away by the Dutch in 1642.
On the mainland China, the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) was defeated by Machu who later founded the Qing dynasty. A Ming loyalist general led the troop to oust the Dutch and established the government in exile in Taiwan in 1661. Taiwan was annexed by Qing Dynasty in 1683.
