The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie at first seemed to be a book about belonging. The story is about the life of a teenage boy who is an outcast because of his appearance. Many people get made fun of because of how they look. This novel is titled The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian because the main character in the story is an outcast who is trying fit in at his new school. A great part of the story is about Junior trying to unsuccessfully fit in at his new school.
As I was reading, I had one question in mind. Why did Sherman Alexie choose to write in first person? After I thought about the question, I figured that the point of view is not as important as the story itself. Poverty can do many bad things to hurt people and their families. When the novel begins, Junior is a boy who does not have many friends because of the way he looks. He mentions one of his closest friends whose name is Oscar. Oscar was a dog who made Junior feel like he had a reason to live on this planet. One day Oscar got very sick and was not recovering. He needed to see the vet, but unfortunately his family could not afford to take him to the vet. Junior’s father takes his rifle and shoots Oscar so he doesn’t have to suffer. Junior lost his one and only friend. Many people can relate to the novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. People all over the world suffer from poverty and some can’t even afford food to feed their families. Many children starve everyday and are too weak to help their families make money. Children all over the world face many hardships. It is a horrible experience to have any obstacles in your life that you cannot
