The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian
Junior is a teenage Indian who lives in a reservation with his parents, and sister, who later moves out. He has many traits which some are good, but some are bad. Explained below are three of his best traits. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, the main character of this book, Junior, is a good basketball player, a brave Indian for leaving the reservation to go to Reardon - a white school -, and draws cartoons to express his feelings to others. The first trait Junior has is being good at playing basketball. The quote, “We beat Wellpinit by forty points...I only scored three points...Rowdy only scored four points...I held him to four points” (194), proves that Junior later on joined the Reardon basketball team

In this section of the novel, Rowdy and Junior reconcile over a discussion on how most Native American’s are no longer nomadic as their ancestors used to be, and the only nomadic person on the entire reservation was Junior. Knowing that he and Rowdy would part ways someday or another, Junior started tearing up. Rowdy tells him to stop crying and throws him a basket ball, and the two play until the sun sets. This illustrates the emotional side of Junior by showing that he often can’t control his feelings and emotions. Junior realizes himself that he can get emotional at times, and this can be seen on page (FILL IN THE PAGE WHEN YOU HAVE THE BOOK), where he says,” And that made me cry. Man, I’ve always cried too easily. I cry when I’m happy or sad. I cry when I’m angry. I cry because I’m crying. It’s weak. It’s the opposite of warrior”. The…

At the beginning of the book, Junior believes that most of the hope and opportunity in Spokane and Rearden, rests with white people. We know that he believes this because of what he says on page 50 when he recalls playing rich, white Rearden teams in competitions, he says, “Those kids were magnificent. The knew everything. And they were beautiful. They were beautiful and smart. They were beautiful and smart and epic. They were filled with hope.” This quote confirms Junior’s original belief that the hope rests with white people. Also as a result of this, we can infer that he doesn’t think he is as good as white people, which might be why the teams from the Reservation (rez) always lose to the Rearden teams. The rez teams lose to the Rearden teams not because the Rearden kids are more athletic or smarter, but because the rez teams don’t think that they can win.…

Junior was born on the spokane reservation. Junior was born with a disease where he had too much cerebral spinal fluid in his skull. First, the development of knowledge of a collective identity based exclusively on Reardan fosters Junior’s sense of insight of unity and purpose. As seen when Junior states, “We beat Wellpinit by forty points. Absolutely destroyed them.” (194) Junior identifies himself as a student who attends Reardan, who plays on the basketball team and not as a hopeless child on the reservation with the declaration of “we”. Junior’s insight of purpose was to defeat a part of himself (Wellpinit) in order to hope (Reardan). The loss of individual…

He is very sentimental and sensitive. He is afraid of being by himself in a new world. Not having Rowdy in Reardon High School, makes it a little bit harder for Junior because people will make fun of him and could also hurt him. On page 54 Junior says, “I’m scared dad.” Dad replied, “You can always go back to the Rez School.” Junior does not want to go back to the Rez School because he could get hurt and he also won’t be able to get a good education. Junior already made the decision of going to a different school and he was not going to give it up just because he was scared. Junior has conquered some of his weakness. An example in which show us that Junior has overcome one of his fears is when Roger made a racist comment about Indians. He said, “Did you know that Indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” Junior punched Roger in the face and then challenged him to fight but instead Roger walked away from Junior. This is a big achievement for Junior because this time he didn’t have to depend on Rowdy to help him out. Little by little, Junior is defeating his…

Defeatism is a dangerous mind set to have. When one expects to fail and accept it, is likely one will fail. Defeatism takes away one’s ability to handle pressure and one’s composure. It leaves a person unable to handle events in an effective way. It also robs people of the ability they will need to succeed at whatever they set out to do. With a defeatist attitude people give up quickly and fold at the first sign of trouble. In the book The Absolute True Story Of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexi several of the characters suffered from a defeatist attitude. “Self-confidence is an inner quality that is not a steady state. It comes and goes depending on the environment we find ourselves in”. (Edmunds, USA Today) The characters Arnold, Rowdy and Arnold’s parents all displayed life altering attitudes of defeatism.…
