Dear Notre Dame Parents: You, as parents, are the most important and influential people in your children’s lives. You are interested and involved in every aspect of their development, their activities, their academic progress, and in the planning of their futures. Your children also need you to take an active interest in their preparation and planning for college. This handbook will give you the basic information you need to guide and advise your children as they approach the college admission process. It is not designed to provide the answers to all questions or to address the needs of all students. Students should feel free to meet with their counselor. Parents are always welcome, but for their convenience, they are also requested to make an appointment. Guidance services are provided through Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 by Mr. Daniel Damweber, the Guidance Counselor for Grades 10th, 11th & 12th; Ms. Paula Staples, the Guidance Counselor for Grade 9; and Mrs. Michelle Vail, the Guidance Secretary. The office is located on the main floor in the school building. The Guidance Office telephone number is (610) 867-7012 and the FAX number is (610) 867-9378. Since my freshman year, I have been in the Lady Mountie Soccer team and since my sophomore year I have been in the Shades Valley Color Guard. While still being in those sports activities, I also take part in other organizations like the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society, and at same time taking AP classes. From being in all of these activities and classes, I have learned to be excellent at time scheduling with homework, soccer and color guard practices, and meetings. Although it may be challenging to keep track of time while taking more classes with UA Early College, I am still willing to proceed with the program because I know that there will be help from UA Early College peer coaches, and learning communities coordinator. Also I regularly finish all of my work that my AP classes gives me, and I dedicate myself to my other extracurricular activities. Therefore, I have no doubt that I would be successful as a UA Early College student because I know how to leave space for my studies, I am an eligible student, and I can commit to learning at a UA Early…

Making decisions can be extremely difficult but one of the worst feelings a person can have is having a decision made for you. Although one may consider these changes in direction to be trivial, in truth they may actually have the power to alter the path of one’s life. Like many Grade Twelve's, I put my fate into the hands of the Admissions Office of each prospective University. I had done everything I could in the beginning of the year to get respectable grades and be accepted into all the schools I wanted, just so I had every possible option available to me. It started off well, with my early acceptance to Queens University and University of Alberta but then came McGill University. It had been one of my top choices, and I was tremendously disappointed. Although I have now accepted that I have no chance of attending McGill this upcoming Fall, it was still painful to think that an entire future, a whole different person that I could have become, died away with that one rejection letter. In time, I realized there was nothing left to do but to go check out the other universities. Fortunately, I fell in love with the Queens University campus just two weeks ago after visiting it for the first time. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." Though I may not be able to control the unexpected twists in my life, at least I know that I will always be able to face any upcoming challenges with a strength…
