The Usefulness Of Television

Television is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. Mass can easily access it hence influencing society instantaneously. Television may provide unrealistic messages such as violent ideas. So does television only have its bad sides?
Firstly, television helps us to learn more about the world and to know and see many new things. Television can often present information to us in a more effective way than books can. For example when the national servicemen are required to report unexpectedly, their code names are flashed through the television throughout the whole of Singapore. Thus, information can be sent throughout the country more effectively and faster using the television.
Secondly, television has increased the popularity of sports, arts and entertainment. Television is a good way to relax, enjoy and learn. For example, after a stressful weekend, students wind down and watch the television during the weekends. Thus television is an alternate way to entertain people.
There are some people who are against television as they think that it is harmful because in some cae television can make us addictive. For example, if we enjoy a programme, we will try to watch the next episode no matter what. This means that people may end up watching too much television. Thus the television makes some people addicted and avoid doing other stuff.
Television also encourages us to buy things that we do not need. It takes time away from reading, going sports, meeting people and etc. Television makes people violent. Many parents use television to calm their children. They put their children in front of the TV set. They do not care whether it exposes children to rubbish. They see scenes of violence. This will make the children want to imitate the scene and may end up getting hurt. Thus television can sometimes sent a wrong message.

“The Golden Age of Television” brought many changes to America (Bhattacharyya). Modern America is not like America was in the 1940s and early 1950s, and one reason is because of television. Musical shows, children’s shows, movies, news, and so much more are on TV. Television doesn’t only entertain us, but it helps us in so many ways. We can learn from TV. Different educational channels are created to help us learn (Cochrane). TV is a way for us to get information, too, just like books and the Internet. Lastly, television can also affect people and their lives. Before TV, there was more interaction between people (www.printmoment.com). Today, there is not as much interaction and communication between people. As you can see, television helped shape modern America by helping people learn, affecting people’s lives, and brining new ways to broadcast information to Americans.…

I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Television is great for entertainment but has grown into a major problem.…

Television is just another part of technology keeping us from viewing the world and living our lives as we should. Instead of coming out of our house and taking on any challenge the world might have for us, we easily give up to our laziness, which quickly makes us grab the bag of chips, the soda, and sit down. Even though I am one of the many people who just loves to have the remote by their side, I strongly believe that television is nothing but detrimental to our society.…

A major issue now facing members of the public is television. Is it good or is it bad? Well television is in my opinion very good. For starters it is very cheap all you pay is the one off payment for the television and your TV licence every month. For the price you pay you receive a lot of information and entertainment for the whole family. Television keeps the children busy when you may want a bit of peace and quiet, whilst teaching them at the same time through educational programmes. Television also helps to develop the child's mind by showing them lots of different things and what not to do. Television provides lots of educational programmes for young people to learn and because there is picture people can get an interactive tour into whatever they are studying. It provides vital facts in all subjects such as, science, general knowledge and it even shows you how to make and do things you may not have been able to do before.…

The usefulness of television has been a very controversial argument over the years. I feel there are a lot of both positive and negative properties about television. The positive side of television, there are many educational programs that help inform us. The news channel is an excellent example of such. News broadcasts can tell us about disasters that may have occurred, weather forecasts, and current events. Children may also watch shows that help with learning basics. Another pro is the integration of culture into our society. However, with the pros come many negative effects. Spending too much time watching television, consumes the precious time that can be spent in productive and healthy activities like exercise or reading. It also uses up the time that you can spend interacting with your family and friend. Children today watch television for long periods. The dependence to television deprives them of their time to play. It would be better for children to involve themselves in physical activities…
