9 April 2014 Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem Almost every year, about thirty thousand commit suicide and an even higher number of people try to kill themselves (Gale). This is a touchy subject, but so many people think about harming themselves, but why? There are a lot of reasons why people decide to do this, but what is the main cause? A lot of people think suicide is the right thing to do, but they never take the time to think that suicide is just a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If they just give themselves a few hours or so to calm down, or maybe look into getting help, they should be fine. When someone gets down and feels like they are completely worthless, they may think that they aren’t important to anyone anymore, but in reality they are important to many, many individuals. On that note, teenagers are more prone to attempting suicide. Medicine Net states that “The suicide rate for adolescents ages 15 to 19 was 8.2 deaths per 100,000 teenagers”. Although, that is very high for teenagers, they aren’t the only age group to pursue this, other age groups do too, but teenagers are more common to do this. Also, ethnicity and gender are a big part of suicide. American Foundation of Suicide Prevention “Reveals that in 2010 men had a suicide rate 19.9 as women had a rate of 5.2”. So obviously men are way more prone to attempting suicide; also they state that Caucasians are at the highest risk for suicide. The biggest cause of suicide is being bullied, and the most popular and worse type of bullying is cyber bullying. According to Yalda T Uhls “Cyber bullying is defined as electronically mediated behaviors among peers such as making fun of, telling lies, spreading rumors, threats and sharing private information or pictures without permission to do so”. Stop Bullying.gov states that cyber bullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7

Being bullied leads to suicide, this is like murder. One factor that has been linked to suicidal ideation is experience with bullying. Youths that have bullied and bullied others are at an elevated risk for suicidal thoughts, attempts, and completed suicides. Research shows that experience with peer harassment (most often as a target) leads to depression, decreased self-worth, hopelessness, and loneliness; all are precursors to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Bullying is a form of abuse that is displayed toward the victim which forms an unhealthy relationship. This relationship consists of the bully having continual control of the victim’s life for an extended period of time. It gives the bully a sense of empowerment that they continue to feed off of. This is much different from school aged aggression that typically has a one-time occurrence, such as fighting or teasing between friends. Conversely, bullying can lead to suicide. Bully related suicide can be connected to any type of bullying, whether it is physical bullying, emotional bullying, cyber bullying, sexting, or even the circulating of suggestive photos of a person. Sadly, over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide and almost seven percent have actually attempted it.…

I believe the main cause of suicide is the effects of society. We all have our own personal problems and stressful life events that we go through. A stressful life event may range from a break up between a boyfriend and girlfriend/ divorce of husband and wife, a death or loss of a significant loved one, or society not excepting people sexual orientation (gay, lesbians, transgender). All of these factors can take a toll on a person’s emotions. Whatever the problem may be, we must ask ourselves: “if suicide is a choice for us, would it be worth ending my life because of this problem?” People who commit suicide probably figure that whatever the stressful life event they may be experiencing is not worth living through. The people who commit suicide failed to realize that suicide is a permanent solution to what could be a temporary…

Do you know that one in twelve teenagers self-harm and ten out of a hundred thousand commit suicide? According to psychologists at Mayo Clinic self-harm is the act of deliberately harming your own body, such as cutting or burning yourself. Typically not meant as a suicide attempt, self- harm is an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration (mayo). Psychologists at Mayo Clinic define suicide as taking your own life, in a tragic reaction to stressful life situations (mayo). Throughout this paper I will refer to self-harm as SIV also known as self- inflicted violence. Suicide and SIV have become more known ways that teens cope with their feelings and the daily stresses they have. I believe that people should become more aware of teen suicide and SIV because of the way it affects the lives of teens every day. If there was more of an understanding of the causes of teen suicide and self-inflicted violence then these things would not occur as often. Self-harm, or SIV, is one of the many ways that teens cope with their feelings.…

“Suicide is when people direct violence at themselves with the intent to end their lives, and they die as a result of their actions” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012). In 2012, the CDC used that as the definition of suicide for their “Understanding Suicide Fact Sheet”. After that definition, the CDC acknowledged that suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States (2012). Suicide is a major public health issue for it is one of the top three leading causes of death among the youth and early middle-aged (CDC, 2005). There are many ways in which one could commit suicide, and with the increase of depression and other social disorders over the past five decades, it is very important…
