    51. The five trends affecting us in today’s dynamic workplace are: Heightened Global Competition, Flattened Management Hierarchies, Expanded Team-Based Management, Innovative Communication Technologies, and “Anytime, Anywhere”/Non-Territorial Offices. Global Competition requires constant communication to stay one step ahead of your competitors. Flattened Management has eliminated some of the middle line managers and has forced top level management to communicate with employees that may possess certain language barriers. This trend has required all employees be skilled at all types of communication; written and oral. Expanded Team-Based Management has forced employees to share knowledge and information. This requires successful communication skills as said before as well as a lot of patience. Communication Technologies are ever changing. Luckily, my generation has grown up in this technological environment. The “Baby Boomers” or my parent’s generation weren’t so lucky and continue to struggle to stay adjusted to the fast paced changes. Technology will be an ongoing, constant challenge of staying abreast, if you miss one step or innovation, you’ll be obsolete. Anytime, anywhere offices make work a little more fun!! Technology plays a great part in the social implications of our modern world. Americans can hardly go a day without using the new technology and inventions. Science fiction is a thing of the past. Now we have cell phones, flat-screen T.V.’s, portable computers, video-games, the web, CT scans, antilock brakes, and more. If you compare a 1985 model car to its counterpart of today, you can see the improved and added features such as, power doors and windows, dual airbags, better fuel efficient engines, built in CD and GPS, air conditioner, and fewer defects (Nye, 2002). The modern economy today is knowledge based, globalized, entrepreneurial, IT-driven, and innovation-based (Atkinson, 2010). The forever changing forces, such as economic climate, fast paced, and challenging times is what the workplace is now. The office design has become smaller and simpler. The process of workplace technology has grown immensely. The reduction of the computer in size, weight and mobility requires less space and yet it stores more data, reducing the amount of paper being used (London Councils 2006). As more of the work…

There are several similarities and differences between Maya Angelou's "Champion of the World" and Amy Tan's "Fish Cheeks." In both stories, the main character is trying to fit in with a group of which they are inherently not a part of. Angelou tries to fit in with the elder African Americans in that she copies their feelings of hope that Joe always full name or only last name will win the fight, and Tan tries to become a typical white American girl in order to attract a boy that she likes. Angelou, being so young, mirrors the adults’ desire for the triumph of Joe Louis, who is viewed as the representative and hero of the oppression experienced by all black people. Because Conjunction beginning a sentence of all the blacks gathered in the store, Angelou is surrounded by blacks who are proudly rooting for Louis’ triumph, the African-American victory over decades of oppression suffered at the hands of whites. She is filled with this desire to win and is unashamed to take pride in her ethnicity. Unlike Angelou, Tan is ashamed of her race and wants to fit in with Americans.…

Advances in technology cause great controversy. These controversies are centered around the influences technology has on the people who engage in different types of technology. In the article titled “Out Semi-Literate Youth? Not So Fast” by Andrea Lunsford, she explains the importance of technology and how, in most cases, technology is able to help develop students. In another article titled “Hal and Me” by Nicholas Carr, he stresses the point that technology is pushing ‘the good life’ to the wayside. Although both authors have different opinions when it comes to technology, they both agree that changes are occurring due to technological influences on peoples’ brains. Technology plays an extremely large role in the lives of the people in this world, it is important that everyone understands that changes that come with the advances of technology.…

Many workers were slow to take up technology; this latency is due to some individual’s natural resistance to the types of adaptation presented by changing technological innovation. Many employees are nervous and/or exacerbated of being forced to modify the way they execute their job operations. Every company has people that would much rather be operating "the old way". Slowly, these people are either adopting or modifying or are facing reduction. This reduction can take the form of either wearing down or in extraordinary instances - cancellations or layoff. It is not unusual for a company to go through a cleansing procedure that removes "dead-wood" and people who do not obtain the needed skills. Because computer systems are…
