Teaching My Children to Fish
“How do I attempt to teach my young kids beyond facts!”
- a lot of us are drilling our children with facts ..are we preparing them for the “knowledge economy”?

When I began my journey as a father, I told myself, I must try to give my kids the best start in life and prepare them for the future. I am sure most parents have the same thought as me. However, interestingly, I am sure all of us, “first-time” parent, will start to think: “what is the right thing to do then?”

Well, just like most parents, my wife and I started my kids on books as soon as they hit the ground. We bought picture books when they are just babies, one-sentence book when they are toddler and slightly lengthy book when they are in kindergarten.

We also picked up flash cards to drill them, black and white cards, picture cards, dots cards etc all in the hope of wiring up their small but high potential brain.

My wife and I agreed to keep our kids away from too much television. We read too much of the down-side of television that we feel that can wait. We only selectively let them watch some educational VCDs or TV program. Some of our friends wonder how we can do it. A lot of kids are exposed to TV when their grandparents or parents watch them. Some parents even proudly told me that their children are learning Chinese from watching the Chinese serials every night.

Most educational psychologist believes that television will stifle kid’s creativity. They do not have to imagine or think. A simple way to prove that is comparing them to a story book. The kids will need to imagine the story in their heads through the words while they need not imagine at all when watching a TV program. In addition, we will also reduce the risk of them getting short-sighted. Of course, the argument is that TV may not be the main cause but if I could reduce one of them, wouldn’t that help them reduce the probability.

But, how are we able to “control” or reduce their urge or desire to watch? I believe in a

When we want to stimulate the child’s senses we start them with the sensory tables. Each table consists of a tub that stimulates a different sense. When you stimulate the senses you help to stimulate the child cognitively, and emotionally as well. This can be achieved through science experiments such as the one we did over the holiday with a pumpkin and what does it smell like and feel like on the first day what about before it is carved vs after it is carved. We do this with all the kids from ages 3 to school age.…

Adults are known for watching so much TV our younger generations are starting to develop the same habit if not worse due to more technology. Children are exposed to watching TV at such young age due to their parents watching TV. Children ages two to five years old watch an average of 32 hours of television a week, that is doubled that recommended amount per day. Imagination does not always involve dealing with realistic feelings or reading books and having to understand ideas in an intellectual way. Imagination does not need to be taken seriously; intelligence, on the other hand, should be taken seriously. Giving a child a book will test his reading and literacy skills. Putting a child in front of a 20/20 broadcast will confuse him. Reading books are meant for learning, not to expand one’s imagination. Children are not supposed to believe that television and video games are bad for them when this addictive hobby only makes them happy. It is only an excessive amount of television entertainment that will truly damage a child’s intellect. Adults, however, understand both how to read and the difference between reality and fantasy worlds and the effects television has on their intelligence.…

People prohibit their kids from watching TV mostly because they are trying to protect them, I think. I don’t personally think anything on TV is really that bad that your kids need “protecting” from, but I know that a lot of parents are more protective then I see myself being one day. Some parents only let their kids watch…

These days just about every household owns a TV. There are many programs for children on the TV and we may think that it is harmless for a child to watch TV because they are “educational” or what not. True, some shows can teach your child some beneficial things such as learning to count or the alphabet, yet if a child is watching too much TV how can this impact the way children interact? And how much do you think is too much TV watching? Well according to the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they say : “The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming.” We may think, well why this is when the kid is under 2 years of age how can it have an effect on them. Well the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they mention “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development.” I personally have noticed that kids in this day and age play less outdoors and when I was a child I always wanted to go play outside and use my imagination to create my own adventures. Now I see many parents struggle to get their kids to go outside and play. I notice many kids are addicted to watching TV or even more so be stuck on playing video games. According to (CNN.com) “ when you consider that more time is spent in front of a television means less time spent on homework or having stimulating interactions with adults or other children. In addition, late-night TV watching tires kids out so that they can't pay attention in school. Also, television hands kids all the answers, promoting passive learning and short attention spans. As a result, kids have difficulty concentrating and working hard to solve a problem.”…

According to the article “How TV Affects Your Child”, the first 2 years of a child's life is critical for brain development. It goes on to state that TV can interfere with children interacting with other children which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development. The author believes that advocates are pushing for more educational television, but most feel zero television time is the solution. I do agree with the author when they state that they feel it is important for parents to monitor the content of what a child is watching and limits how much time is spent in front of a television. However, I do not think that no television is the answer. Let's take a look at some pros of television.…

First, let's turn to the importance of an education. It's always a good idea to let our kids know that an education is important. That little piece of paper is extremely important. My father always told me that he always regretted the fact that he never continued his education. Of course, it was not really necessary due to the fact he works in the construction field. My mom is the perfect example of where a good education can take you. After her company was outsourced to one of those "cheap labor" countries, she decided to go back and hit the books. Now, after her head is out of the textbooks, she is an accountant for a multi-billion dollar communications company (can't really blame her for the bankruptcy, the owners just got greedy). "We all have to [go to school] to get anywhere in life, and that's what I gotta say to myself everyday." This sentence changed my entire outlook; of course, it was too late. The right people had signed the papers and I was kicked out of school. I knew what I had to do though, to get anywhere in life, I needed that piece of paper. So I signed up, studied hard, and took the test. I want my kids to learn the value of an education, show them that it really can take you places.…

Television can have positive or negative effects on our children. Children learn by watching and imitating adults. Television provides many influences for children that may not be what you wish for your kids. Television has become a "member" of almost every single family on our planet. And not just an ordinary member, but a very important one, because the time spent next to it exceeds the amount of time spent together with any other family member. You do not have to apply any efforts to talk or listen to complaints while “communicating” with it. You do not have to play with your baby son after a hard working day. You can simply turn the TV on and everything is done: kids are quiet, your wife is not complaining and you feel absolutely happy. It is so simple that it has become an integral part of the culture of every family. It is the only time, when a person can forget about all the family troubles and the failures of the day. The sofa opposite the TV set has become the place of “relaxation and spiritual unity” of the family. With television programs—and even a cable channel—designed and marketed specifically for babies, whether kids under age 3 should be watching becomes an important question. Television, movies and other electronics entertainment are not appropriate for children under the age of, even if they seem mesmerized by it.”(Miller, 2013, p326).…

According to Nielson Media Research, in 1950, only 10% of American homes had a television and by 1960 the percentage had grown to 90%. Today 99% of homes have a television. In fact, more families own a television than a phone. Would you believe that 54% of U.S. children have a television set in their bedrooms? They do. I suppose that when you look at those statistics it would be no surprise at all to learn that fifty-five percent of children questioned usually watch television alone or with a friend, but not with their families. Children spend more time learning about life through media than in any other manner. The average child spends approximately 28 hours a week watching television, which is twice as much time as they…

Television has made many youths to be dull especially in class work. Many youths spend most of their time watching television rather than reading. Reading has now become a difficult endeavor for the youth, as they prefer to watch rather than read. Reading can help children to learn better so that they can have a better life in the future. Even when handling their assignment, they do it while still watching television, which considerably reduces their concentration. I have seen it with my brother who after schools rushes to his usual place and he immediately become engrossed to the television program that is being aired. It takes a lot of convincing to make him to start doing his homework, which he does reluctantly while, still watching ‘his programs’. To him the television is his world and reading is boring as that is how he usually describes it. This will definitely slow his learning since reading stimulates the brain more than watching. Watching does not require a lot of thinking and concentration compared to reading, which one must have an attentive mind to understand the concept. This will therefore lead to more people with…

Kids spend more time watching television every day than on any other single activity, aside from sleeping. Since the first television sets appeared in homes, in mid-twentieth century, television has grown into a phenomenon found in almost every household. In the beginning, there were only three principal broadcast networks; today, there are hundreds of channels available. There is no doubt that television has an impact on all of us, especially on children, so that it came to be accompanied with criticisms and concerns. Children love watching cartoons and movies, but too much of it during developmental years can have a significant negative impact on them. To minimize the potential negative effects of television, parents should be control TV watching and substitute it with healthy activities.…

Parents are role models for their children, regardless of age. Parents play an irreplaceable part in their child’s lives by being their first teachers. Parents teach their children how to read, cook, count, among other early childhood tasks as the child grows. It is very important for parents to be involved in their child’s life to help them mature from a baby to an adult.…
