Teaching English at High School in Vietnam
Language is a very important means of communication in daily human life. Human beings use language, both in written and spoken form, to express their ideas. In a wider scope, language functions as a means of international communication by at least two persons. In a smaller group whose members share the same language, for example, there are likely no difficulties in using the language since the persons involved in the process of communication are used to speaking their own native language. On the other hand, if the people taking part in the conversation speak different language, they must have difficulties or obstacles in getting along with each other. One of the problems causing the difficulties is the language used. Accordingly, they need a language which is understood by both sides, the speaker and his or her counterpart. This will occur when the speakers are from different backgrounds: nationality, race, and language. In this case, an international language is very badly needed, especially the one that is the most widely spoken in the world. One of the languages is the English language. In Viet Nam as well as in other countries, there is a greater and greater need to learn English, from young to old, and from male to female. No one can deny the importance of English in Vietnam at present. Therefore, English is being taught at every educational level. However, learning a language is difficult, because each language has its own system which is different from that in the learner’s native language. The differences in the system of language may bring about learning problems for foreign language learners. Thus, it is inevitable that in learning English as a foreign language Vietnamese students usually have problems on account of the differences between Vietnamese and the target language. It is proved that English grammar is complex and often causes embarrassment to students. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, by 2020,

English is fast becoming the dominant means by which the world is able to communicate. It is being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English as a common language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Nevertheless there some people who believe that this fact has changed and that now it is more important to learn Spanish and Mandarin than the English language. Anzaldua dealt with this issue on a consistent basis in her school life. Though she was not told to lose her Spanish ways, she felt that speaking English would not allow her to express herself. Especially in the American culture, it was necessary for her to learn English to communicate with her peers. Furthermore, the English language is the number one lingua franca no other comes close.…

Nowadays, all people say that English is the most essential and easiest language that people could use to communicate in different countries. As I read thoroughly the two articles, which are called “ English seen as a Co-star among Global Language” and “Can English be Dethroned”, I’ve found out that people more commonly accept using English as a second language in the 21st century. The benefits of English as a common language for communication and interaction far outweigh any possible disadvantages that it might have. English is a global language not because the world shows respect to it by accepting it as a global language because it has the characteristics of a global language.…

There are over 4000 languages in the world. A language counts as ‘living’ as long as there are native speakers alive who use it. Each language represents the culture of its speakers. By learning a new language you can learn about the history and character of its speakers. But what would the world be like if there was only one global language? In this case there would be no cultural diversity between people. Verbal understanding would be better, but the diversification of ideas would cease. While it seems like it would be nice to have a common international language that everyone could use, language is almost always linked to culture, and different dialects of the world language would certainly develop. This is already happening to English, where speakers from England or the US would have a very hard time understanding what they say in Singapore, even though they are speaking English. The variation of languages is thus very important. The number of languages grows as they continue to be discovered in the unexplored regions of the world. A language is considered to be nearly extinct when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers. It is the responsibility of ever parent to teach their children their native language in order to preserve their roots and cultural identity.…
