Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments

Before the start of the lesson, I would ask the teacher which instrument/s were to be used and if we were to use music sheets or books needed.
I would make sure the classroom was safe and tidy, I would then check there were enough instruments for each child or if they were to share and make the space around the instruments accessable to more than one child. I would then set out the instruments and any books or sheets to allow the children to begin the lesson straight away.
Before to the class I would check where the instruments were kept and if they were in a suitable place for the children to get to.
Before the children attended the class, I would check all of the instruments were in working order so that any damaged or dirty instrument could be cleaned or dealt with in the appropite way. I would then knew how to use the instruments so that i could help with any child/ren who dont know how to use them. This will allow me to be confident when helping the children and help me to be a positive role model to the children.
During the lesson, I would supervise the children and keep their concentration on the lesson , handing out praise and encouragement where needed. I would help any child who was struggling with the lesson and provide support and encouragement when needed.
While the lesson is in progress I would be confident with any issues or questions that may arise so as to help the children to get the most out of the lesson.
During the lesson, I would observe the children to see if any needed any extra help or if any child stood out. This will help me to review the lesson with the teacher and make any plans for following lessons.
At the end of the class I would get the children to help return all the instruments to the correct place and check the instruments were still in good

Our last observation this semester was with Rachel Pollard at Hartwood Elementary School. This school includes grades K-5. Mrs. Pollard is in a very unique situation, because she sees each of her classes for forty minutes twice a week. Since she has twice as much time with her students as compared to most other music teachers, her students are able to advance quickly with their musical skills. This benefit was very obvious through my observations. Mrs. Pollard’s lessons were well thought-out and she had clear objectives in mind for each activity. Everything she did served a purpose, including singing a song to move the students into a new seating arrangement and her “point checks” at the beginning of class.…

On our first day of camp, I was informed that our pit instructor, Chris Martin, would no longer be teaching at our high school, and that we were unable to obtain a replacement. With the other upperclassmen on the drumline, or the snares, bass drums and quads that march on the field, I was the oldest pit member, and the most knowledgeable in the way pit-percussion operated. With three new freshmen, one of whom had never played an instrument in his life, and two sophomores, everyone in the pit looked to me for guidance. With no professional pit instructor available, I was asked to teach the pit. Although the task felt overwhelming at the time, I accepted and made the best of my situation. On that first day of camp, I didn’t know how to start. My first thoughts were, “my god, what have I gotten myself into?” Eventually, I was able to clear my head, and I remembered back to my freshman year, when I was still a rookie. Thinking back on my own instruction, I began to teach the way Chris had taught me: we started with the basics and worked our way up.…

On Monday, April 13th I taught a lesson to Ms. Ross’ fourth grade class at Hawthorne Elementary School with Ms. May. Overall, I believe the lesson went well and had a successful outcome. I was extremely prepared for the lesson with a detailed lesson plan, materials, and discussion questions all planned in advance. This was very beneficial when teaching the lesson and resulted in a smooth and effective lesson. The beginning of the lesson did a great job introducing the lesson because I asked the students effective questions to get them thinking about the topic. One way I believe I could have enhanced the introduction of the lesson even more is by getting more students involved in the discussion. After asking each question, I could have asked students to turn and talk to a neighbor and leaned down to talk to individual students, which would encourage every student to participate instead of just a few. After introducing the topic, the students participated in interactive game on the Smart Board involving measurement. This went well because the game not only got students participating but excited, motivated, and grabbed their attention. If I were to teach this lesson again, I would make sure to ask more questions while the students were playing the game in order to check that the students were not only doing the activity but also understanding it. In order to have enough time for the entire lesson, only a few students were able to play the game, which could be a negative but I believe the game was successful even with not every student participating, The students seemed to really enjoy this part of the lesson and were very engaged. It was easy to tell the students enjoyed the game because every student had their…
