She is sent out to break her promise with Shay that she wouldn't tell, but all Tally wants is to be pretty. So she is willing to betray her friend. Tally uses the clues Shay left behind for her, the first clue is "Take the coaster straight past the gap". Which is easy for Tally to understand because her and Shay snuck out one day into the abandoned world and Shay showed Tally what we used to call a roller coaster. They rode on it using their hover boards, but then there was a break or gap in the coaster. So every clue that Tally was given is something personal to the two of them that only they would know. Every clue was like this, even though some might be harder to figure out. Like one clue which required Tally to make her “worst mistake”. The only thing Tally could think of was taking her hover board off the cliff and into the ocean which sounded life threatening. Tally slowly got closer to the water trying to see if her hover boards connection would last but then suddenly she felt the board give out and let her free fall to the icy waters below. But right before she hit the water Tally and the board stopped. There must've been some sort of iron deposit under the water but falling definitely seemed like it was going to be her worst…

From the very beginning of the story, being ‘Pretty’ is so amazing. Everyone older than 16 gets turned ‘Pretty’, and that is the average. If you are younger and ‘Ugly’, you are not important until you get the procedure. Westerfeld explains this through Tally’s thoughts, “Of course, Tally was nothing here. Worse, she was ugly. But she hoped Peris wouldn’t see it that way. Wouldn’t see her that way.” This line shows how it feels to be ‘Ugly’ around the ‘Pretties’, Tally feeling that as she breaks into a ‘Pretty’ party. She feels…

As is true for most stories, Specials has multiple themes and teaches many important lessons. One central theme is the idea that human nature cannot be controlled, especially their disagreeable mannerisms. The government in Tally’s world attempts to control not only the way people look, but the way they think as well. In the class of people below Tally, the “pretties”, doctors secretly create lesions in the brain during surgery, essentially brainwashing their citizens to make them less confrontational and easier to control. Tally is a special because the pretty surgery did not work on her. Her brain is too powerful to be corrupted even by specifically calculated lesions. A few of her friends join her in the transformation from pretty to special…
