Talk About the Life of an Important Person in Your Country’s History.
Ho Chi Minh (alias Nguyen Sinh Cung, Nguyen Tat Thanh, and Nguyen Ai Quoc) was one of the greatest leaders of all time in Vietnam. He was born on the nineteen of May, 1890 in Kim Lien village, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province. Social context and family education has a profound affected him when he was young. He attended school in Hue and then taught at a private school in Phan Thiet for a short time. In 1911, he went to abroad, did many different jobs. He also participated in the revolutionary movements of many peoples while making great efforts to struggle for his nation’s independence and freedom. In 1920, he took part in establishing the French Communist Party in the Tour Congress. In 1921, he founded the Union of French Colonial Nations; published the newspaper Le Paria in France (1922). In 1924, he attended the Fifth Congress of Communist International and was appointed a standing member of the Oriental Department. In 1925, he founded the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth Association in Guangzhou (China) and organized “Communist League”, and he also published the two famous books, The Indictment of French Colonialism and The Revolutionary Path. In 1930, he founded the Party Founding Conference in Hong Kong (later renamed the Communist Party of Vietnam). From 1930 to 1940, Ho Chi Minh engaged in activities to release the Vietnamese nation under difficult conditions and hardships. In 1941, he returned Vietnam and led the people and prepared the general insurrection to seize power throughout the country. In 1945, when Japan surrendered, the Vietminh came to power and announced the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi. Under the leadership of the Central Party Committee, headed by President Ho Chi Minh, our resistance war won a resounding victory at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. During the last years of his life, he devoted his efforts to constructing a Communist society in North Vietnam. He died in 1969 in Hanoi, at the age of seventy - nine. President Ho Chi Minh

    Studying the prior history of Vietnam is important because we learn that Vietnam was completely under French rule by 1893 (Week One Lecture, 2013). Why was Vietnam such a prized possession to have? Vietnam’s location was significant within itself; Vietnam had “a strategic location astride major shipping lanes linking India, China, Japan, and the islands of Southeast Asia” and served as a source of foodstuffs and raw materials (Moss, 2010, p.2).     The goal of this group was to encourage them to unite together against Japan and France and by 1945 communism dominated in the Viet Minh movement. In August 1945, Japan was defeated by the French and gave them back Vietnam. The Viet Minh reacted by marching into the city of Hanoi and taking power.
