Tackle Projects Others Don T Want Analysis

The video I watched at http:edcorner.stanford.edu/ was an interview with the co-founder of Nest, Matt Rodgers, called, “Tackle Projects Others Don't Want.” I was intrigued by some of the messages and the advice that was shared by Rodgers in his interview. It seemed as though he was pushing the idea that if you believe you can do something and give your all to it you can accomplish it. One of the first things he stated that stood out to me is that, “when someone gives you a really hard problem, just get excited about it and figure out how to solve it.” Getting excited about doing something really hard seems easier said than done. Another message Rodgers shared was that building a career on things that seem unimportant to other people may be a risk worth taking. Rodgers used Apple’s manufacturing division to drive this point. Most people who think about working for Apple think about the more attractive areas of the company like “the UI work and the industrial design.” However, Rodgers states that one could learn a lot from working in field that seems less desirable to others. While working in manufacturing, Rodgers learned a lot about how things are made which helped him tremendously when he started Nest. Something that Rodgers also pointed out is that when one starts a company, it is good to dream big, have a “huge road map,” and think about the endless possibilities for the startup.
