T. Gondii
It turns out that your kitty can cause an actual mental illness to occur if you’re not careful. It’s through a process called toxoplasmosis, and that happens when a parasite called T. gondii invades the body.

In most cases, the tiny parasite remains benign. However, in rare instances it can cause mild mental illness in humans.

Here’s how cats are involved.

T. gondii normally live inside cats. But when mice become infected by the parasite, it turns off certain defense mechanisms in the brains of mice. The smaller animals normal avoid cat urine, but T. gondii makes mice drawn to the scent of cats. That usually means mice infected with toxoplasmosis end up as a cat snack.

Once a cat eats the infected mouse, the parasite reproduces since T. gondii only reproduces inside of a living cat.

gondii, things get even weirder.

Three studies link exposure to cats at a young age to mental illness as someone grows older. Apparently, your cat driving crazy is an actual thing.

So there’s a solution to this problem if you already own cats: just use commons sense and wash your hands often. Since T. gondii are found in cat waste in the litter box, always wash your hands following cat litter box cleanings.

Does your cute n’ cuddly feline seem like a good snuggle buddy now, or would you rather keep your distance a little

This is my cat ‘‘Buttercup’’. You might wonder: Why that name? Well, when I founded him, it was unavoidable to match his muddy yellow coat with the bright flower. He had a mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing and eyes the color of rotting squash. According to my older sister, Katniss, Buttercup was the world’s ugliest cat but it did not matter, because I knew that in the bottom of her heart she was starting to love him. Besides, he was a great help at home, for he was a born mouser. So, we did not have vermin problems anymore. Furthermore, Buttercup was very special for me; he made me feel safe when I had nightmares during the…

Researchers were initially working on regulation of infections caused by Toxoplasma gondii a single celled parasite which resides in the intestines of cats. While studying the effects of Toxoplasma gondii researchers noticed that when introduced to a healthy immune system the initial response increased production of cytotoxic T cells as well as Natural Killer Cells. The goal of the Cytotoxic t cells and natural killer cells is to identify and destroy an invasive pathogen. In the Dartmouth studies these cells vigoursly begin attacking the parasite and elevated the immune system by raising awareness throughout the body. The Geisel group began studying organisms infected with Toxoplasma gondii and found that the immune response was exactly that of the desired response cancer researchers are looking for…

The pattern is similar in humans. After you're infected with T. gondii, the parasite forms cysts that can affect almost any part of the body, but often affects your brain and muscles, including the heart. If you're generally healthy, your immune system keeps the parasites inactive, and they remain in your body for life. But if your resistance is weakened by disease or certain medications, the infection can be reactivated, leading to serious complications. Although you can't catch toxoplasmosis from an infected child or adult, you can become infected if you come in contact with cat feces, ingest contaminated food or water, contaminated kitchen utensils, fruits or vegetables, or an infected organ…
