Also Tennessee Williams was aware of the increasing conflict of new and old values. Born in Columbus, Mississippi, as son of a tatterdemalion father who was driven by sex and alcohol and as son of a very much the southern belle like, oppressed and refined mother, a daughter of an Episcopalian minister, he grew up in the cultural clash of a traditional southern society (Müller 92). In his social environment he very soon felt like an unadapted outsider. A disease that prevented him from the integration in a group of male peers, the exaggerated care by his mother and the experience of her nervous breakdowns and conniptions, his homosexuality that was taboo as well as moving from the rural area in Mississippi into an anonymous metropolis in the West made him feel weak, troubled and in a certain way oppressed (Müller 92). These physical and mental sufferings let him slip into promiscuity and alcohol and drug abuse. To escape this undesirable, foreign and hostile reality, Williams fled into the world of writing where he could found shelter by the use of symbolism and fictional mantling in the world of illusions (Müller 93).…

The Symposium (c. 385-370 BCE) is widely regarded as one of Plato’s greatest philosophical and stylistic triumphs. The dialogue recounts a drinking party in the house of Agathon at which Socrates and a number of other prominent Athenian citizens deliver speeches in praise of Eros (Love). Our assigned section begins just after the end of Agathon’s speech, in which the young Sophist heaped lavish praise on Love for his youth and beauty. Socrates addresses the gathering and disputes Agathon’s account, laying out his own vision of Love as the desire for the eternal possession of the good, a bridge between man and the divine.…

He works with many gang members who are trying to turn their lives around. Father Kelly has had much success with his cause. At the ministry he provides a safe haven for people to get off the dangerous streets and maybe acquire some tutoring, or participate in extracurricular activities. It really moved me hearing him speak and seeing how he dedicates his life to bettering human…

“Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and why not”, said by George Bernard Shaw (miscellaneous quotes). In society today, many people go about with things and don’t ask why they do such matter. In the article, “Corn-pone opinions” by Mark Twain, he uses a good example: he states that “fashion has established itself: it is admired, now, and no one laughs”. In other words, fashion is created, and people go along with it and never ask why they do so. Alain de Botton argues that humorists are not to entertain but “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly”. In agreement, humorists play a vital role in society.…
