Symbolism In Guns Redemption

In peace like a river, guns are a symbol used for taking authority into your own hands. When guns are used in the book, there is always a sense of power belonging to whoever is wielding the gun. From the second chapter where the current land family is being introduced, there was a lot of focus on controlling a gun the right way while hunting. Jeremiah, Reuben, Davy, and Sweed were at August Shultz's cabin. Reuben follows Davy hunting, and when Reuben observes Davy holding his gun waiting to shoot, he sees focus in his face like never before. He uses many descriptive words when explaining Davy holding the gun such as "I remember the low angle at which he held his shotgun; I remember his shadowed, patient eyes--he looked ready to burst from cover and chase down an antelope." (Page. 14) a little while later, while redescribing the scene with Davy hunting the goose, Reuben says "Not confidence --I understand confidence. What Davy had was knowledge." (Page. 15-16) The in depth explanations of the moment really showed the tension that Reuben felt in that scene. Later on, he wills the two intruding boys with the same type of self assured authority. Near the end of the book, we also see Jape Waltzer use a gun while killed Jerimiah.
