In her book Legacy of Luna, Julia Butterfly Hill narrates the two years she spent living at the canopy of a thousand year old redwood named Luna in Stafford, a rustic town on the North of California, to save it from being cut by Pacific Lumber-Maxxam Corporation. Hill’s story is a detailed journal on how her spiritual journey transformation, the different political interests of environmental groups, corporations, policy makers and the public opinion collude to redefine her mission and its final outcome. Hill is successful at saving Luna and bringing public attention to controversial forestry practices. The book ends with a pledge based on Hill’s belief; trees must be protected because they are vital for survival of earth’s ecosystem. Overall, modern-day actions of civil disobedience, like Hill’s, are effective if the mission sets well-defined attainable goals able to bring popular sympathy.…

The reason that the English and the Australians attacked Turkey was quiet simple, Russia was being attacked by Germany and was struggling to maintain defences, at this same time Turkey was also supporting Germany and invading Russia. As a result Russia requested assistance from its British alliances. The British also felt that Turkey would be a great trading port, as it allows great access to the Black Sea. So as a result the British bombarded the Turkish shore batteries to test their range of weaponry and defences, this only eliminating the power of a surprise attack. Three months later a British and French fleet of eighteen battleships attempted to force its way into Constantinople the capital of Turkey via the Dardanelles straits, three capital ships were lost and three badly damaged. This large scale attack had drained all of the Turkish weaponry and at the time the alliance (France and Britain) could have continued to advance down the straits and invaded Constantinople, but as they did not know this, the British and French decided to set up a post at Gallipoli.…

The bloodiest time in history for America was during The American Civil War; a time when Americans fought against themselves for their own rights in which they believed they were entitled to. To many it would be considered shocking and absurd to say the Civil War was something that could have avoided – and they’re right. The Civil War was an unavoidable and ultimately inevitable conflict that was essential to the evolution of our nation. The differences between the North and the South, economically and politically, were majors players on why the two divided halves of the America could not prosper together at that time; that and the fact that they had previously tried to compromise also makes the Civil War the inevitable and undeniable conclusion of this melting-pot of problems brewing between the two sides. At first the civil War was about saving the Union, but it became much more when the debate of slavery in the North and South came about. Sectionalism became a problem.
