The short story “The Palm Tree Bandit” by Nnedi Okorafor is about a young girl named Yaya who lives in a small village surrounded by an environment where there is division between gender. The women were not allowed to climb up palm trees, and they weren’t allowed to cut leaves or get the wine, for when the wine was touched there was lots of power to whomever was touched. This is why women weren’t allowed to climb the trees because the men were the ones to only have the power “Supposedly women would evaporate into thin air because they weren’t capable of withstanding such power” (Okorafor 17).
