The main idea of William J. Clinton’s speech “Remarks to the Convocation of the Church of God in Christ” is that the United States is becoming more violent every day, many innocent children are dying every day, and that he wants the American people to start doing something about it. In his speech Clinton spoke at the church where Martin Luther King Jr. last delivered a sermon about freedom. Clinton used the opportunity to address issues of crime, violence, and family as he launches his plans to make America safer for future generations. He addressed many stories where young kids were being killed and being violent towards others.…

    Aa Meeting Review

Walking into the AA meeting made me feel very awkward and out of place, but as the meeting began and everyone started sharing their stories I began to feel comfortable about being there. When I first went in the room the chairs were set up in a circle with some on the outside of it. I decided to take a seat on the outside so I wouldn’t be of focus during the meeting. They started the meeting off with reading some inspirational words and then reading the 12 steps. Their focus tonight was on a higher power and how believing in that higher power helps you stay sober. After brief introductions and stating their names, they began discussion and whoever wanted to speak had the opportunity to do so. Listening to all of their stories was really interesting. Almost all of the members have been sober for at least 30 days and more and about four people were just recently sober, with one being sober only three days now. One of the member’s stories really stood out to me. He said that he has been an alcoholic for years now, but always believed he can cure himself and control how many drinks he has. He mentioned that he went out last week with his buddies and wasn’t able to stop himself from going overboard with the drinking. He said he was in a blackout for four days and lost his job. That’s why he ended up at the treatment center; he said he realized that it isn’t possible to be a social drinker when you are an alcoholic. During his story he explained how he had the shakes and the classic withdrawal symptoms and I began to think about what I had learned in class and related it. Another member’s story was about social drinking. She said that her friend was coming home that she knew from college and wanted to get together. She thought about the friendship and realized that she wasn’t a friend and that she was just an old party buddy. She explained that she has a whole new group of sober friends that she hangs out with and that she can’t hang out with her old friends of whom she…

    City Council Meeting

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

In “long in Dark, Afghan Women Say to Read is finally to see” By Carlotta Gall proves that learning how to read and write can have dramatic effects on the Afghan women. Many afghan women felt they were blind because they were not able to read and write. “Blind” is the word many of these illiterate women use to describe themselves. Making the connection that not being able to read is like being blind illustrates how these women felt and makes you fully understand that this was like a disability to them. Some of the women wanted to know something so that they could help their children “said Mahgul, 45, a widow and mother of six” I have no knowledge, and so I am not a useful person I can get some knowledge, I can help my children more.” Afghan women also complained about different day to day things like being able to decipher street signs, even for the bathroom signs, or being able to understand medical prescriptions. not being able to go in the correct both room or being able to understand a street signs is another way that shows us how drastic not being able to read and write effect there day to day lives. Many years their culture under the Taliban prohibitive women to read and write. Finally when they were able to have the freedom to read and write the afghan women greedily embraced the governments back to school campaign. The women were eager to get an education from themselves and their children. “People realized that the reason for all these years of war was the lack of education in the country,” she said. ‘Both the men and the women realize this now and want to change that.”…

Before I went to the meeting, I was expecting the meeting to be like seen on TV. Looking something around the lines of a middle school auditorium with chairs all facing the stage and someone gets up there and talks. Or a meeting where everyone sits in a circle, facing each other and each person shares. Instead, the meeting was in a cafeteria in a hospital. The seating was very casual and welcoming. When we walked in there was about 40 people just talking and sharing. There was a very positive vibe, which was very different than I expected. I was also surprised about the amount of new or just visiting members. At the beginning of the meeting, the leader asked if there was anyone who was new or just visiting and about 5 people stood up and introduced…

    City Council Meeting

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

For my project I visited the City of Hesperia’s Official Website and reviewed the April 1, 2014 City Council Meeting which is available to the public on line. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place an invocation was performed followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. I have never heard of a prayer referred to as an invocation and it prompted me to review the words definition, “a public request for guidance, good will, good wishes, and good things. (Wikipedia). I was very pleased to see that the council members have chosen prayer as guidance followed by the pledge of allegiance, a leadership respectful of God and Country.…

Nonviolent action is a way for ordinary people to fight for their rights, freedom, and justice. It is frequently associated with moral or ethical nonviolence, but I will address it here as a distinct phenomenon, separate from any moral or ethical underpinnings, to expand on how it works as a pragmatic way to exert leverage in a conflict. Nonviolent action is based on the insight that power in a society is ultimately derived from people’s consent and obedience. In contrast, the prevailing view is that power in a society is inherently based on whoever has concentrated wealth and the greatest capacity for violence. But just as the economy is a subsystem of the biosphere— and therefore is ultimately governed by the laws of the biosphere—so too, systems of power that are seemingly based on violence and money are actually subsystems of thousands or millions of people’s broader behavior and obedience patterns. If those people shift their loyalties, behavior, and obedience, the balance of power in a society, and in the world, shifts. Simply put, if people do not obey, then rulers or corporations cannot rule. Nonviolent action, therefore, wields power by creating shifts in people’s loyalties, behavior and obedience patterns at a collective level. This can happen dramatically, for example as it did at moments during the Indian Independence Struggle, the US Civil Rights Movement, various labor struggles (i.e. the United Farm Workers movement in the mid-late 1960s), and the downfall of Ferdinand Marcos (1986), Augusto Pinochet (1988), Apartheid in South Africa (1980s-90s), Slobodan Milosevic (2000), and the authoritarian system in Ukraine (2004). Or, shifts can happen more subtly, as when people choose to shop at locally owned businesses, boycott a product, or work to develop alternative institutions and economies. Regardless of its myriad of methods and manifestations, all acts of nonviolent action fall into one of three categories:…

The first meeting I decided to attend was an AA meeting. I choose this meeting from a list on Google.com. I did not have any requirements for the meeting, but I made my final decision based upon the location and familiarity of the location. I use to live in the area and was comfortable that my choice would be in a safe location. I choose to go to a meeting in the day time, due to safety and my gender. I drove to the meeting with no complications to finding the exact location. The church has signs that displayed “AA” and arrows guiding the direction of the front door. The meeting location is three blocks from public transportation. The meeting is held at a church which may prevent other religions from participating. I am a Christian; therefore I did not have any prior feeling about the meeting location, but a feeling of nervousness, and a sense of being naïve was present. My first observation was the lack of anonymity with the “AA” signs being displayed. I have seen “AA” meetings on T.V., so I came with a preconceived notion that the meeting would be conducted as I observed.…
