This exam will tell of his intelligence, what he doesn’t know is that he might not make it out alive. Selser, uses Dialogue, Multiple points of view, and setting a tone to show Dickie’s strength of hiding how he is nervous.

In the beginning of the story, the author is using a lot of intelligent craft moves. Seslar, uses craft moves such as dialogue throughout the story, the author use short sentences coming from Dickie. Like “yes, sir” “why, dad?”. This shows, that there is not a lot of description in the text, to explain what he is thinking. When I pulled Billy from his class for the evaluation, he was open and easily talked with me. It was apparent Billy came ready to give his best effort, but he grew tired of testing as time went on. When Billy encountered difficult test items, he would become frustrated, give up without giving much effort, and speak poorly of himself when he did not know the answer to problems. He appeared bored at times, and he expressed anxiousness to return to class as the session continued. Throughout the evaluation, Billy had a mature pencil grip and often held down his paper with his left hand, while writing with his right hand.…

Dan’s mother, Molly, helped him into the office by supporting him under his arms. His upper body works normally but he has trouble with his legs, particularly his lower legs, and is unable to walk on his own. His mother took him immediately to the corner of the room containing the toys and books, then lowered him to the floor. Dan picked out a science book that appeared to be geared towards children a few years older than he. Lying on the floor, he began to read aloud and frequently questioned his mother, who sat in a nearby chair, about pronunciation of words, as well as dates and background information on famous scientists mentioned in the text. His mother answered all of his questions, and when she did, he engaged her in further conversation about the subject until he was sure that he understood.…

In An Encounter, the epiphany is an unwelcome one; the boy felt sudden guilt when he called Mahoney. ¡°I was penitent; for in my heart I had always despised him a little.¡± He realized he did not entirely mind the old man's talk about whipping Mahoney¡ªsomething in it pleased him, just as, in a different way, it must have pleased the old man. The old man symbolizes a person who had spent quite a few years as an adult in the real world. He is the symbol of what could happen to the young, not-any-more-so-innocent boy. This story is about the initial steps a young schoolboy takes towards adulthood. He has not yet across the threshold as he will in Araby, he is still fantasizing about it. However, his epiphany awakens him to apprehend his nature directly, and it opened his eyes to the adult world; he is now afraid of the way ahead being dark, full of hypocrisy.…
