Summary: Hurting The Music Recording Industry
Is the RIAA’s strong stand on copyright infringement helping or hurting the music recording industry?
I think it is actually music piracy that is hurting the music recording industry. They need to take a stand on the situation to help prevent the loss of revenue to music theft. I still have the same stand point that if you wouldn’t still the physical copy of the CD from the music store. The, what makes you think it is okay to steal the digital copy of the CD online. The music is stolen either way, and the money is lost for the copy. I think piracy is going to continue to escalate as technology rapidly expands. That requires measures to be taken to help stop the theft of others music, art, or software.

Yes, I think the internet hurts more than helps artist. Before the Internet, artists were selling their CD’s and everything was fine. Since the Internet, many problems arrived. Ten years ago, the biggest record labels were worried about online piracy. Fearing piracy and seeing the fall in the CD sales, they decided to license their records to new online services. The idea was to use a new technology, share music while collecting small fees and discourage fans from stealing music online. But it didn't work as most of the listeners hear free music online because it is much cheaper than purchasing music. Nevertheless, many people (like myself) are aware of the fact that these artists make a living off their album so if they really like it they will decide to buy it on iTunes. I believe that some artist may have difference in opinion simply because they actually understand that not everyone will have $9.99 to purchase their album. Most of the artist that I listen to have a "rags to riches" story and can empathize with lower income individuals. I recently purchased some of the artist J. Cole's songs via iTunes and in one of his songs entitled "Note to Self" basically said, he did not care if only two people bought the album, he just felt proud of himself as an artist. It is not all about money to some (very few actually) of these artist. To that artist that is more after the money, I guess they would take the position that technology does in fact hinder them, however to someone like J. Cole, he would say. it has no barring.…

If “retardchicken” had to partake in an ethical argument against CD piracy, I think he would have a very easy time based on the perennial duties we should all live by. Historically, the philosophical world has agreed that we have several responsibilities toward other people. For example, “retardchicken” could claim that by pirating the CD, “overstand” is wronging another person. That is, “overstand” is basically stealing a copy of a CD that someone worked tirelessly on. Also, by “overstand” burning another copy, he is not promoting the beneficence of the band or person who created that particular CD. Additionally, “retardchicken” could claim that by “overstand” burning the CD, he is in part not showing his fidelity toward the record label.…

In an article found in Just do IP (Issue 42, August 25, 2000) Talal Shamoon states, "People are copying music because they feel somewhat disenfranchised with the options they have at their disposal in the digital space. It's up to the content industry to create value in the digital arena and they've made phenomenal steps in that direction." District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel ruled in favor of the Recording Industry Association of America (http://www.riaa.com/) (RIAA) regarding the Napster copyright case, based on the size of the violation that was taking place. Judge Patel directed Napster to stop its song-swap activities. An online survey reported that sixteen percent of the people surveyed supported the claim that Napster was in violation of regulations and should be shut down. Fifty seven percent believed it was unrealistic to try to control the free exchange of music. Sixty percent of Napster users said that they would not be stop downloading music even if it were determined to be illegal. Eighty tree…

What is your position regarding the topic? I think that we cannot prevent the inevitable, the new era of innovation in music industry cannot survive without new technological advances, and therefore I stand for internet music download applications and websites even though it may harm music industry. CD sales are declining and changing just like vinyl records and cassettes 10, 20 years ago.…

First, I am going to discuss how piracy brings down the economy. Right now, many people are guilty of piracy all over the world. These people are downloading and trading products for their personal use through the internet. Not paying for software is hurting the business of artists very dramatically. People who break copyright laws might not understand how bad they are hurting the industry. Artists are spending millions of dollars on copyright protection but they continue to get broken due to people becoming hackers. Businesses spend more money that they do not have. Because there is a lack of funds, very few people are hired. If people keep using piracy instead of buying the products, companies have less money and in turn, they cannot make any more products for people to buy. Many people would be very upset if a product that was coming out could not be made because the company did not have the funds to produce it because people are not buying their other products.…

City and Colour, Our Lady Peace, Arcade Fire and Billy Talent are all bands that depend on the Canadian recordi//g industry. Without this industry these bands would have had a hard time becoming known to such a wide array of people. Not only does the recording industry help make the actual recordings in the studio, but they also make it possible for artists and bands to put out songs on CDs. These CDs allow artists to showcase and share their musical talent with fans all over the world, however in recent years this has been changing. CDs are finding their way off the selves and record stores are closing. With the advancement of technology the Canadian recording industry is finding ways in which they can advance and succeeded. It is through things such as digital downloads that is keeping this industry very much alive, without it many would consider the music industry as it once was to be dead. Even though CD sales are decreasing that does not mean that the whole recording/ Music industry is dead, CD sales are just one part of the revenue. Digital downloads are now more popular than ever, however just like the CD it may not be popular forever. There will always be something new to come and take over what once was. In a world that technology is always changing the Canadian recording industry is not dying, but is very much alive by finding ways such as switching to digital downloads to keep up with the demands.…

The reduction in my profits is a terrible thing. I am not sure how to stop copyright infringement. There really is no way to stop people from sharing music unless we make it more affordable. This also hurts the artist who is signed to a record label. The record label takes a percentage of sales for promoting and distributing the material. If we could make music available digitally that can help reduce the cost of an album. It eliminates packaging and shipping. There really are no legal remedies to pursue in my opinion. By suing fans you will create a bad name and make people not want to purchase your material. It is hard to sue everyone as well. Some people cannot be caught. All we can do is find a new way to deliver music that will not be able to be copied and distributed. ITunes is a great example.…

Elaine McArdle said, “The music industry is struggling with a full blown crisis”. What could possibly be pushing the music industry into a crisis one might ask, illegally downloading free music. In the essay, Up on Downloading, three Harvard Law School professors are trying to come up with different solutions to this problem that is occurring. Now that our technology has become so advanced, many people are figuring out ways to cheat the system, and when people are not paying for the music they have downloaded, the artist is not getting paid. Artists are not the only one losing money but everyone involved producing the music is losing money as well. There is also less and less people going out and buying CD’s. I could probably not even remember the last time I purchased a CD. So how are the artists and producers suppose to make money when we are stealing from them? Zittrain, Nesson, and Fisher believe they could possibly have the solution to save the music industry.…

When music is downloaded illegally, the artist suffers. This is one of the primary reasons why downloading free music should remain illegal. When a person illegally downloads a song from a website, that is one less potential sale for the music artist. Teenagers and students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players (Sabbagh). One reason people may not care about illegally downloading music because they think that music artists already make enough money. Well, that certainly is not true in the case of music artists who aren’t very popular. Furthermore, even if the artist already has a lot of money, who is anyone to judge how much they should be making. They earned the money, so they have a right to it. Another problem that occurs for music artists when their music is downloaded illegally is, often, the downloaded song isn’t of good quality. Occasionally, if people are downloading a song from one of these websites, they are not really getting the best quality of music available. Usually the song has been burned or reproduced a few different times. The quality of the artist’s hard work is being destroyed and it makes the artist look bad and lose fans. In apparent frustration, some music companies have introduced defective copies of their music into the file-sharing…
