Research paper (textual analysis essay)

Directions Write a textual analysis essay (six to eight pages, double-spaced, 1500-2000 words in length) in which you analyze a subject, character, theme, or other aspect of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. You should use at least three sources (the text itself counts as one source). Use the MLA format. Here are some suggestions:

1. Do a character study of Gregor Samsa or any other major character in the novel. Provide textual evidence to justify or explain your interpretation.
2. Since Kafka has been linked to the existentialist movement in Europe, discuss The Metamorphosis as an existentialist text. Provide textual examples.
3. Analyze a specific scene (or scenes) in terms of a major theme in the novel. Provide evidence from the text to justify your ideas or interpretation.
4. You can compare The Metamorphosis to another literary work you’ve read, but you need to let me know which book or story you’re using to make sure it’s appropriate for this assignment.

Process

Prewriting: once you decide on a topic, make a list or create an outline to help you organize your thoughts.

Rough draft: write a rough draft of your essay. Go over it to correct any obvious errors. Use the spell and grammar checkers, but keep in mind that they won’t catch everything and might give you a wrong suggestion (it happens). Make sure your sentences are complete and grammatically sound. Send me the rough draft electronically (jkidder@aii.edu) by the deadline we establish in class.

Final draft: when you get your rough draft back, make the appropriate changes and bring a hard copy of the final draft to class Week 10.

Due Date

The final draft is due Week 10. LATE RESEARCH PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
