Students With Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
Students with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) will respond in a variety of ways to changes within their environment and instructional program. Management suggestions identified for a student with an APD should be based on the student’s individual profile of auditory processing strengths and weaknesses. Teacher may start a dialogue with their parents, ask them about how their child is doing at home and seeking some tips about what works for their child. Teachers can make eye contact and repeating important instructions to the child with APD. Other than that, teachers are encouraged to arrange the students with APD sitting in the second row near the middle of the classroom and away from noisy distractions like the door, limit background noises

    The student is five years old. The student is in kindergarten. The kindergarten class has fourteen children. The classroom is a mainstreamed and both teachers have special education experience. The student has strengths in reading comprehension, phonics, and spelling. He enjoys puzzles and can complete a fifty piece puzzle on his own. The student focuses on the end pieces of the puzzle first. The puzzle is a picture of the United States and the students reads all the states and their capitals. When the student completes the puzzles he recites the cities that are listed. His weaknesses are in physical activities that involve group participation. The student does not show interest in teacher directed games such as leap frog. The student has trouble making eye contact and engaging in conversations. The student repeats questions when he is asked. The student repeats what he hears throughout the day so he will often say hello, how are you? When the student repeats the phrase he does not make eye contact or pause for a response. The student has an IEP and a goal for the student is to promote conversations with peers, family members, and teachers. The IEP states that the student works with a therapist for speech. The speech therapist states that the student uses echolalia which is repetitive use of language. The student can read age appropriate books for eight year olds. The student read the book, Stegosaurus The Dinosaur with the Smallest Brain, by Elizabeth J. Sandell. The student pronounced every word correctly. Another saying he often repeats out loud often are, come on lets wash your hands. When the student says that, he does not go wash his hands. In fact the teachers have to aid in hand washing with the student because he seems to avoid soap when not supervised. The student was…

    The day I observed the child was the day he had speech therapy in a group session. Due to the confidentiality of the other children, the speech therapist was uncomfortable with me attending the speech session with Child N. As per the teachers the child was said to demonstrate consistent errors in speech sound production. One or more of the child’s phonological patterns of sound are at least 40% disordered which makes the conversational intelligibility significantly affected. Some of these errors include distortions, substitutions and omissions. As noted in chapter 8 in the textbook, speech sounds errors are defined as articulation problems. (Heward p.306) At times he becomes over excited and can be perseverative, when he perceives a language task, such as word retrieval. He would become silly by laughing then trying to change the subject. These behaviors occur to some extent as an avoidant mechanism.     Self monitoring is a strategy that is often used in classrooms with children who have trouble staying on task and focusing. It is a method that involves a student taking responsibility of themselves academically and behaviorally and recording when they find themselves not on task. In essence, a sheet of paper is given to a child and a noise is made at certain intervals during the class day. This noise could be something that only the specific child hears (such as in an ear piece) or it could be something that is heard by the entire class. Either way, the student who is participating in self monitoring simply puts a tally mark in a column for “on task” or “off task” on their sheet of paper every time the noise sounds off and at the end of the day both student and teacher can see how many times the student found him or herself off task. This helps put into perspective for the student how much he or she pays attention in a regular day and typically causes them to try harder to remain on task even more the following day. It is important that a teacher lets the student know exactly what is meant by “on task” and “off task” so that the student understands 100% what is expected of him or her, and it is also important that the sound itself not be distracting from the lesson. Eventually, a student can be weaned off the external cues of the sound, and will begin self monitoring without it, which is ideal.…
