“Since the first PED suspension in April 2005, 39 players have been suspended while on major league rosters. More than 60 others have been suspended while in the minor leagues.” (Gehring 1) In Major League Baseball, performance enhancing drug testing began in 2005, but many athletes thirty-nine to be exact have violate these rules and continued to use steroids. Some of theses athletes such as Manny Ramirez and Rafael Palmeiro have been snubbed by the Major League Baseball ‘s Hall of Fame due to their use of anabolic steroids. These athletes careers have been negatively affected due to their use of steroids and in addition they have put their bodies in jeopardy because of the serious side effects known to anabolic steroid use.…
4. What is Chafet’s response to the charge that if it allowed players to use performance-enhancing drugs, the Baseball Hall of Fame would set a bad…
Steroids is a performance enhancing drug use by mostly baseball players. In the article “ Let’s steroids Into the Hall of Fame” by Zev Chafets, agreed that steroids should be let into the Hall of Fame. His reasons were: “ Helps them perform better, heal faster or relax during a long stressful season and calm players nerves. He also goes on and says “ allows fans to see what was really happening.”. Using steroids is cheating and users do not deserve credit for their accomplishments.…
Pete Rose, all time hit leader in the MLB, is banned from the Hall of Fame. Rose, a player and coach for the Cincinnati Reds, gambled on a numerous amount of games for the Reds to win while he was a coach. With this the MLB banned him from being on the ballet to gain entrance into the Hall of Fame. People still debate wether or not Rose should be allowed in the Hall of Fame. Supports of Rose say He only gambeled when he was a manager not a player while people against him say that gambling in MLB as a player and or coach is illegal within the league.…
When I go watch my Chicago Cubs at beautiful Wrigley field I am concerned with the game and what is in front of me, not what is going on off the field. I go to enjoy the game and the talent of the athletes that play. I could care less about what Sammy Sosa is doing off the field, he is the man because of his skills on the field and what he does for Americas' past time. Last time I was sitting on the third base line and Sammy stepped up to the plate I did not think to myself "I wonder if he hits his wife like he hits a baseball," or "he looks like a big time gambler," I was shouting his name and clapping in support for hope of another homer being sent over the ivy covered wall. My enthusiasm was booming for this mans talent and what he brings to the table to help my cubbies win. Now would you not think that a baseball player in the Hall of Fame should be looked at the same way? Should a hall of famer not be jugged based on his baseball skills and what he did on the field? Well that does not seem to be the case when it comes to Pete Rose. Since being banned from baseball in 1989 for off field actions he denies, he has repeatedly been denied access to Cooperstown. Pete Rose was one of the greatest baseball players ever and should be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame because of it.…
In conclusion, athletes who took steroids should not be inducted into the Hall of Fame because it is illegal and those players are cheaters. Sports organizations took action due to the health effects steroids have on users so that they would no longer be associated with bad health and illegal drugs. Cheaters is the only word to define these steroid users because they gain unnatural strength instead of working hard for it. It is time to stop inducting steroid users into the Hall of Fame and it begins with having players stop cheating and for the fans to vote for great, hard working athletes into the Hall of…
* I care about this issue because baseball is our national past time, and players are destroying that past time and their reputation towards younger baseball players. It matters to me because I grew up playing baseball and watching the “Steroid Era” happen, all the records that legendary players made are being broken by players on steroids.…
The usage of steroids gives the user an unfair advantage over other athletes that have worked hard to gain muscle mass without using steroids. It is easy for someone to cheat and win. With steroids, you are tricking your body. You are creating something that is not you, and that is why you are cheating. It is estimated that as many as six million Americans have used or currently use steroids. It is unbelievable that somebody could somehow live more easily and more pleasantly because of chemicals. It is fine if someone is using steroids to recover from an injury so they can get back to work and behave like an ordinary person, but God forbid they should use anymore steroids than necessary and become unusually strong. That would be morally wrong. In the same way, it is fine if people use Prozac to feel normal, and it is fine if they use Xanax to calm down before giving a speech; as long as these drugs are used only for the point of functioning as a citizen. However, as soon as the person starts using Xanax for fun it becomes morally wrong. Athletes should be regulated closely because anabolic steroids are considered cheating. The use of these drugs violates the rules of all athletics. Anabolic steroids are traced far back in…
Major League Baseball players who have used or been accused of using steroids should be considered for Hall of Fame induction. It is often speculated that players who use steroids are more likely to hit more home runs per season. Arthur De Vany proves in his article “Steroids And Home Runs.” from Economic Inquiry, that in the past 40 years, there hasn’t been a significant increase in the number of home runs hit by major league players (490). People argue that because more home runs are being hit per season, and that records are falling with short tenure, that there is a direct correlation to steroid use with out considering other variables. The baseball season has been extended quite a few times. In 1919, Babe Ruth broke a 36 year old record of 27 home runs with 29. This seems to be a remarkable feat, until one considers that Ned Williamson’s (The previous record holder) record came in a season of 112 games, where as…
50 hits, 20 runs, no errors, and massive absence of integrity: that describes now-a-day baseball. Today’s version of baseball and other sports are tainted by the use of steroids and other muscle gaining agents. In 2001 Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs: a single season record. A mere 5 years later Barry Bonds tested positive for the use of performance enhancing drugs also known as steroids. That is what Americans kids are looking up to and taking after. When a High School athlete sees a professional athlete having success due to steroids, their mind is manipulated into using steroids. The use of steroids is detrimental to everyone.…
Have you ever thought of using PEDs in sports?Hi have you ever felt guilty for using a drug?People think PEDs should not be allowed in sports. They should take PEDs seriously because of the risks. Would you take risk to win 1 game or a couple?More kids have started taking PEDs and some have committed suicide. It also can cost people a lot of money for PEDs and they may go poor if they are playing a sport without a contract because the cost of the PEDs. They cost that much because the supply and demand for PEDs.…
My letter to the Baseball Writers Association of America addresses the issue of the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball and the induction of accused players into the hall of fame. I argue that no player should be left out of the hall just because of steroids for several reasons. Unfortunately, steroids were a part of the culture of the game during the steroid era and it is about time that we accept that. Baseball is a competitive game in which you need to keep up with those around you in order to keep your job and many players felt steroids were the only solution. Unfortunately, the steroid era has cast a shadow over the game under which no player can…
In the past year, there have been many stories about professional athletes getting caught or coming clean with using performance enhancers. Lance Armstrong was stripped of all medals after beingaccused of PEDs. He later came clean to the public, apologizing. He obviously realized he was wrong. Another more recent story is Alex Rodriguez, top paid athlete, is a part of the 20 MLB players listed to receive at least 100 game suspension if proven guilty. In the article, “MLB seeks to Suspend A-Rod, Braun” by T.J. Quinn, Pedro Gomez, and Mike Fish, it explains how at least 20 MLB players are under investigation for using PEDs from Tony Busch (founder of Biogenesis of America). In hopes of making a deal with attorneys Bosch, “…pledged to provide anything in his possession that could help MLB build cases against the players.” (, T.J. Quinn, Pedro Gomez and Mike Fish. "MLB Seeks to Suspend A-Rod, Braun." ESPN. ESPN Internet Ventures, 05 June 2013. Web. 10 Sept. 2013.) The MLB suspended 13 players, including Alex Rodriguez for 211 games based off of Busch’s records. Fans everywhere can be arguing or agreeing on this issue. In the case of lance Armstrong, not only was he stripped of medals, his Livestrong foundation dropped him as a spokesman and founder title. Was he wrong for using PEDs? Did he deserve his punishment? These are common questions fans ask each other on this issue.…
The word “steroids” has more than one meaning, there are some steroids, which the body produces naturally as they are required through puberty and can help with stress management. Steroids can also refer to medicine taken for asthma, pain and skin problems. And then there are the steroids which are constantly being used in sport, they are synthetic drugs that are often used by professional athletes in order to increase the production of testosterone. They are available in pills, powder or injections. They are illegal in sport as they give players an unfair advantage and can cause serious health problems. There have been many claims that state that the use of performance enhancing drugs dates back to the beginning of competitive sports and…
Opening day isn't even here yet, and already we have enough controversy to last us the whole season. At a time when we'd much rather be thinking about the smell of fresh cut grass, hot dogs and pennant dreams, we're forced to deal with a far darker issue. Now more than ever, there is alarming suspicion concerning apparent steroid drug use in Major League Baseball. As an avid baseball watcher and player of the game for twelve years this scandal is of great concern to me. In the time to come I will be informing you of how steroid use has tarnished baseball's image, allowed for more records to be broken unfairly and the harmful effects it has on your body.…
