Steroids in Baseball Have you ever watched a baseball game and wondered just how some players are “too good” at the game? I may just have an answer for that. Ever since the early 1990’s, Major League Baseball (MLB) has had a huge problem among players cheating to alter their stats, otherwise known as, steroids. Steroids is not just a problem in the MLB, it is used in many of the other major sports, but in baseball its most commonly used. In this essay I will discuss what steroids are (as well as distinguish the difference between HGH, Synthetic Testosterone, and PEDs), I then will give my input into whether or not players who have been caught “doping” should be elected into the Hall of Fame, and I will discuss the Steroid scandals in recent history. There are three major types of steroids that are strictly banned from MLB. These include Performance Enhancing Drug (PEDs), Synthetic Testosterone, and Human Growth Hormones (HGH). I will discuss the difference between the two in this section. Performance Enhancing Drugs were banned from use in the MLB in 1991, but was not officially tested for until 2003. While Human Growth Hormones were not banned from use until 2005, Synthetic Testosterone was banned from the MLB in early 2010’s. First of all, PEDs are the most frequently used drug in the MLB among players. According to www.BleacherReport.com, pitchers, mostly relief pitchers, typically use the drug. Simply, because they, the pitchers, have to pitch day after day, sometimes the drug isn’t used to get their pitching velocity up; instead it’s, the PED, is used to give the pitcher the security to pitch again. This is extremely difficult for opposing batters, because in baseball, the game is all about numbers. You have less than a second to determine whether or not to swing at the pitch, with PEDs, it makes it that much harder.
