Isabel is an early middle aged woman dedicated to her work. With her career being a priority, she never wanted children. She finds herself cast into a position of helping her boyfriend Luke raise his two children. Although her new role of "the other mother" is not full-time, she now is living off and on with two children in a situation she never dreamed she would be in. The children, Anna and Ben, are at the heart of this story as Isabel's trials as a stepmom are given a critical eye by the children's mother, Jackie. From envy to friendship, Isabel and Jackie share the hardships of life and divorce. These two women have more in common than they think. + Stepmom is an eye watering, true to life comedy/drama. It is the evolving of a relationship
With a story like this one, anything can happen. The two women share a drink and talk about the unsaid. Isabel shares with Jackie her thoughts on Anna's future, "Look down the road to her wedding. I'm in a room alone with her, fixing her veil, fluffing her dress, telling her no woman has ever looked so beautiful. And my fear is she'll think, "I wish my mom were here." Jackie responds with, "And my fear is…she won't." There is never a thing of having the best of both worlds, but there is a thing of having the best of a world. "The skills of the actors, who invest their characters with small touches of humanity, is useful in distracting us from the emotional manipulations, but it's like they're brightening separate rooms of a haunted house." Roger Ebert wrote, fascinatingly well. These women combine the love they have for Anna and Ben and put it into two Christmas presents. Isabel's charm in photography and Jackie's ability to sew and make beautiful crafts will give Anna and Ben both a gift of pure love come Christmas day. Jealousy can only be held onto for so long until one can clearly see the real reasoning behind it. From one mother to another, love is passed on to keep the children
