Yet looking closely, we can see how the girl has changed her perspective. Her intentions seem to be completely different than the man. We can assume that the couple have not settled down because of the girls statement about what they do, “That’s all we do, isn’t it- look at things and try new drinks”(116). We can also suggest that they travel quite frequently when the narrator claims, “He did not say anything but looked at the bags against the wall of the station. There were labels on them from all the hotels where they had spent nights”(118). Through the remarks of the girl we can assume that by keeping this baby instead aborting would allow her to settle down with the man. She also began to stand up for herself as she repeatedly tells the man if he can please stop talking.…

The only thing that is keeping Lourdes from giving up is the fantasy of being whole, happy, and well off with all of her children by her side. This fantasy will soon shatter when Lourdes and Enrique are finally united, and she can see how the decision she made to leave many years ago to find prosperity has played out in reality. Overall, the family unit itself was broken, and this is one of Nazario 's overall points. Enrique continues to enable his broken family when he asks Maria Isabel to join him, risking starting the same cycle of abandonment with his own daughter, suggesting that these decisions are not easily criticized, but rather must be considered as one of many factors at risk in the immigration debate. Nazario explains, “How some children grow into restless adults, who are never able to forgive their parent(s) for leaving them. Others, like Enrique, try to overlook the past and move toward a brighter future; however, their lives are often marked by addiction or other coping methods.” (Nazario,2013). “The true irony is the fact that the mothers originally left their country and children to help keep their family intact.” (Nazario, 2013). At the time little did they realize the…

The Kid`s own father never showed any form of affection toward Kak and this left him lonely and envious of the children whose parents cared for them affectionately. What is more, Kak even marvels at how Bert treats Percy. He says, ``I didn`t let Percy fly back to the loft. It wasn`t yet daylight, but I worried about hawks. So he rode in the truck like part of the crew, and I carried him down to see Bert. He got the sort of welcome from the pigeoneer that I imagined most boys got from their fathers after a long adventure. I didn`t really know, as the best I`d ever gotten was a cold stare and a drunken mumble, but it seemed right when Bert nearly cried to see Percy come home``(197-98). This shows how neglected and unloved Kak felt when it came to his parents. He wanted to be loved like how other children were by their parents. Unfortunately for Kak, his parents weren`t particularly affectionate. Kak was exposed to misery and dread for most of his life. He lived in fear of dying on an operation and in misery of neglect by his parents. His sub conscious bridges his two dominant emotions by a smart remark made by his pilot. ‘Buster’ says, `` Lofty clicked his intercom. `` Just shut the hell up, `` he said. He sounded exactly like my old man. I remembered hearing that so many times. Shut the hell up. Get the hell out. Go to hell, go to hell, go to hell. I wondered what he would say to me now if he…

Jig asks her lover if he will worry about the procedure, and he responds by saying he considers the treatment simplistic, and then Jig states, “Then I’ll do it. Because I don’t care about me.” This statement further asserts the idea that Jig is looking to appease her male counterpart and put her own feelings aside in order to remain with her lover. Jig doesn’t want to lose her current relationship, because her internalized gender stereotypes tell her that women need to be supported by a male figure. Additionally, Jig is continuously being pressured to make her decision by overbearing lover. The man states early on in the story states that, “[They’ll] be fine afterwards. Just like [they] were before,” and then finally claims that the only problem that exists between them is this decision on whether Jig should have an abortion or not. Jig is faced with the decision to either not receive the treatment, which could end in the destruction of her romantic relationship, or to go through with treatment, but regret her decision for the rest of her life. Due to the external pressure to please her lover, like a “good” women would do, Jig receptively states, “I’ll do it,” and soon begins to contemplate this decision. Even though the reader is never…

Although, we are never able to hear the couple speak about their issue in a very meaningful way, we are still able to assume where the problem may lie. Throughout the story the girlfriend shows her inability to express her thoughts, feelings or opinions to persons in her life, For example: when the bartender speaks in Spanish or when she is asked if she would like to order her drink with or without water. She even changes her mind about something as simple as her attraction to the surrounding hills. Her extreme indecisiveness causes her to be completely reliant on her husband’s opinion and knowledge. When the discussion of the girlfriends operation is brought up, the couple seems to abstain from engaging in the conversation. This again shows the girlfriends indecisiveness towards what she wants. This translates into as something as serious as possibly having an abortion. As an example, “I think it’s the best thing to do. But I don’t want you to do it if you don’t really want to.” “And if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me?” (225) this dialogue between the couple shows that immediately after she hears her boyfriend’s opinion, she thinks they will be better off after the procedure. She wants nothing more than to follow through with the abortion in order to please her boyfriend.…

Life has lots of emotions: happiness, sorrow, guilt, frustration, love, and so on. Love is the one emotion which brings in huge changes in our lives and a different kind of emotion begins with it. How can we describe it? Describing love is very hard because in every phase of life, characterization of love can be varied. In childhood, through romantic films and stories, we started to get feeling that love is passionate and when people will be going through it, life would be full of happiness. In adulthood, people’s perception about love might change. Those who are fantasizing about love realized that it is not only about physical attraction but also about relationship, responsibilities and companionship. When ages grow, some people become optimistic about love, some become pessimistic and some of them are on a way to rediscover love. Definition of love can be changed not only with one’s maturity level but also with his/her cultural values. In Raymond Carver story – ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’ – the main protagonists Mel and Terri, and Jhumpa Lahiri’s creation – ‘Going Ashore’ – soon to be married couple, Hema and Navin, had enough knowledge about love but they could not still fully realize it. So, they are on their ways to discover the essence of love.…
