The piece I have chosen is entitled the Steleophorus Statue. It is from Dynasty 18, Reigns of Tuthmosis III and IV from around 1479 to 1390 BCE. The statue depicts a male figure that is kneeling. He is also holding part of a large stela rising to his chin while placed on his knees with hieroglyphic writing on it that has damaged and worn over time. The most prominent destruction is seen on the left side where a large chunk of the tablet has been broken off. In addition to the fragmented stela, much of the original paint has been removed, leaving the figure with orange blotches on his arm and face. This sculpture is one of a group of statues associated with the South Arabian Bronze Age. It comes at the beginning of a figural tradition characterized by extreme simplification and symbolic strength. Represented is a standing female with a role of fat and deep groove emphasizing the belly and a clearly indicated pubic triangle. Her massive body is contained within a quadrangular space. The legs look truncated but the toes, like the hands and fingers, are indicated by incisions. She wears a strap across her body and a necklace. Subject and style invite comparison with Near Eastern and Aegean Neolithic statuary and with much later South Arabian statuary of the second century B.C. In early Anatolia and Greece as in late Paleolithic Europe nude females were dynamic, with curved, exaggerated breasts, belly, and buttocks. The description at the museum mentioned that this sculpture belongs to a series of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea, who was a Mesopotamian king. He rebuilt the great temples of Lagash and installed statue of himself in the temple. The posture of this statue is, an upright seated way on a throne like chair. It has its hands folded on its lap. It also is wearing a turban looking headwear with curls. It has a calm expression, large almond shaped eyes. It is wearing a draping robe. While having a lighter pigment then most, the Buddha is covered in multi-colored, flowing and intricately detailed jewelry. Next, the sculpture of Avalokitshvara, is regal, organic, and flowing, yet, it has a powerful and celestial look. Continuing to stroll down the cyber halls of the museum, I came across a 9th century sculpture from India. The Crowned Buddha appears to be celestial, having a muscular and hefty body type. While being intricately sculpted, the Buddha also appears to have a simplistic, soft and tranquil feel. Through his Jewelry, he is marked as a Buddha who occupies heaven, “maybe he is Shakyamuni in his cosmic form as Vairochana” (Metropolitan Museum of Art, n.d.). Proceeding with my pilgrimage through the museum, I came across the sculpture, Akshobhya, Akshobhya also known as the Immovable One, is a meditative sculpture. The sculpture is thought to have been chiseled out of Terracotta, in the 16th or 17th century in Nepal. While having a soft body type with intricate detailing, the clothes are more organic and flowing. Despite these more down to Earth descriptions, the piece of art reflects power.
