Status Report for the week of 20 May, 2014 – 26 May, 2014
Project description: Update tax preparation software project
Status Summary: The project is scheduled to be completed at least 1 week early.
Green: Nine of the developers are on track to finish their tasks 2 weeks early. The project costs are under budget and there has been no need for overtime. Yellow: There is a three day weekend in the coming month. It is hurricane season in Florida, where three of the developers are located.
Red: One software developer took the recently announced “early retirement” package, and is leaving in one week. He is confident he will be able to finish his piece of work before he leaves. The developer who is retiring is the only person who knows how to get approval for the final product from the IRS.
Issues/Comments: The retiring developer will brief 2 other developers that doesn’t reside in Florida on how to get approval for the final product from the IRS. The retiring developer will also brief the other 9 developers on his progress of his piece of work just in case he fall behind on his portion of task before he retire. All developers including the project manager will have a meeting in 2 days to discuss their progress prior to the three day weekend. Even though nine of the developers are on track to finish their task 2 weeks early, the project manager will confirm their progress to make sure the developers are free of any setbacks that may occur before the due date. An e-mail was sent on 21 May 2014 to all ten developers regarding their progress and changes meeting via teleconference. Obtaining accurate status reports is particularly challenging in the context of software development and it appears that one of the most important factors in securing reporting quality is to overcome the human tendency to withhold bad news (Keil, Im, & Mahring, 2007).
