However, looking deeper into this complex character, one realizes that Duddy 's morally repugnant behavior is due to the influence of a corrupt society, the desperation for approval from his family, and a void of a respectable role model when growing up. Contrary to popular belief, Duddy 's notions on friendships are not as dysfunctional as many perceive them to be: "A friend is a friend. You 've got to trust somebody..." (Page 209) in fact, he is more naïve than sly, often not knowing what actions of his were offending. In Crito, Socrates shows the importance of justice, as his life’s mission is to do just actions that do no harm one’s soul. In this short dialogue, Crito presents three arguments on why Socrates should escape. His first argument states that if Socrates would not leave Athens, it will affect his reputation: “On the contrary, not only I will lose a friend the like of whom I’ll never find again, but, in addition, many people, who don’t know you or me well, will think that I didn’t care about you, since I could have saved you if I’d been willing to spend the money” (Crito, 44c). Later on, Socrates will easily show the weakness of this argument as Crito only focuses on the negative consequences that Socrates’s actions will have on Crito.…

Stand Your Ground is a self-defense law “in which an individual is legally allowed to defend his life against a threat or perceived threat against his life” (Long). This law can be used to protect yourself from the danger of another individual using deadly force. I believe that this law is a great way to defend yourself when put into a dangerous situation. This law also gives more power to the people of the United States, and I think that it promotes more thought before an individual will act.…

Civil and uncivil disobedience are two methods that people approach to solve problems. Civil disobedience is when people use a peaceful form of political protest. Uncivil disobedience is when people pursue violent means to achieve a movement or goal. Civil disobedience is a more effective act rather than an uncivil act because it allows more people to join and it wouldn’t cause severe problems. Civil disobedience would allow children to be a part of the protest. The other reason would be that acting with a civil disobedience you would be sending a clear message to people. A current issue we have today is police brutality and civil disobedience would be the right action to take.…

The United States is a country that prides itself on diversity and individualism. While these ideals are very much true, often times, the pursuit of happiness and the American Dream are harder to attain for people of color or those who don’t abide by “social norms”. American policies are set in place to keep heterosexual, white males in power thus institutionalizing patriarchal, heteronormative and eurocentristic values. The tendency to view all issues from this perspective prevents the voices and experiences of minorities from entering the discussion and instead further disenfranchises them. Likewise, history tends to gloss over the exclusion and oppression of these groups along with their contributions to our society, thus maintaining the…
