Standardized Testing Persuasive Essay
Throughout high school you are given many different tests that determine how well you do in certain subjects. High school gives you many challenges to prove that you are ready to graduate and receive a high school diploma. That is why I feel that giving a standardize test is an unfair way to determine a student’s graduation. Many students can get test anxiety and score low on a subject that they normally do every day. Graduated shouldn’t be set on one certain test because there are many aspects to high school that are completely outside of the classroom. Also there may be students who have done nothing throughout high school, but they “look good on paper” therefore they get away with doing the bare minimum and graduate because of one test score.
To begin, taking a test can be different for every student. From personal experience I know that I can do 10 homework assignments and get close to 100% on them, but when I go to take the test I blank out and lose track of everything I have learned. I know that I am not the only student that experiences this problem. If we measure a student’s knowledge by making them take a test, it would be a big mistake and we would risk the chance of not letting a good student graduate. A lot of the material that student’s learn in the classroom the teachers are told to teach around a certain type of test that you would normally receive at the end of the year. There are other events and experiences in high school that contribute to our graduation. To survive outside of high school you have to think outside the box. It sometimes isn’t the material we learn that we are going to actually use in real life, but it’s the thinking process and concept. It is unfair to base the way a student will be after high school on one test

    Do you hate staring at a computer/ piece of paper for more than two hours and answering questions? I am sure most people would answer “no”, and that is why standardized testing puts more harm than good in today’s world. Standardized testing causes a lot more problems than usual. It used to be a part of life, but now it’s causing kids not to go to college, and it’s causing kids to have a level of stress that shouldn’t even be allowed. People all over are stating that they give a false overview of who the student actually is, and in the end, these tests won’t get you anywhere in life. It’s important to many people including students who are taking the tests, teachers who are preparing the students for these tests, and of course the parents who have to deal with all the complaints from their child about these tests. This is a pretty important issue today, because so much is riding on these tests. If you do poorly you won’t get accepted to the university you want, or your teacher could get fired because of your performance. Although some people think standardized testing is just a part of life and it teaches students that it’s not okay to fail, these tests give a false interpretation of who the student actually is.     I remember stressing about test throughout school, and then college. My students’ main focus should be learning and fully understanding the information, instead of learning how to master a test. I have seen throughout the years how much emphases are but on these standardized test or test in general. I do feel that assessments are important, but I do feel that formative assessments are more beneficial to me. I want to know that my students understand the information while I am teaching, instead of two weeks later when they are tested on a whole chapter or unit. Most states are given standardized and I will prepare my students for the test, but I want to focus mostly on the content and not stressing them out over a test. Some students aren’t very good test takers, which I wasn’t one when I was growing up either. I can relate to students who know the information but freeze up when they take a test. When I create my syllabus I will rate my summative test as my least percentage for their grade. I want them to know that homework, practice, projects, and participation are really important. If I have students that are really smart, they may not feel the need to participate in class and on projects because they know they will ace the test.
