Scheduling is comprised of generating a roster of staff to meet the anticipated needs of a unit based on the historical census and acuity information of that unit (Ellerbe, 2013). Scheduling of staff is based on their full time equivalent (FTE). However, staffing and scheduling must take into consideration the hours of operation, most health care organizations operate on a 24/7 basis and filling a 7-day need will require more than a single FTE. In addition, consideration for sick calls, FMLA, and vacation time must be taken into account.
