St John Narrative
St. John’s and the Out-of-the-Way Alcove There was a chill in the air, just enough to make our cheeks rosy. Every so often the breeze would snatch a leaf from the overwhelmingly yellow trees above, and it would spin downward in pirouettes all the way to the ground. Glancing at Chase, my boyfriend of exactly one year, I was reminded of my prior autumn visits to those woods… My dad had taken me to the trails at St. John’s countless times. Mom and Nate would tag along when I was younger, hiking the path to the little chapel on Lake Sagatagan, but as I matured my dad became the only one willing to bring me. We would spend hours on the trails, me toting my Nikon D5100 camera and Dad just taking in the fresh air. I could have devoted my entire …show more content…
Even though the day was not living up to my expectations, I was still having a wonderful time with my significant other. I asked if I could take his picture next to Lake Sagatagan and he, somewhat reluctantly, agreed. After snapping shots of a few different poses, Chase pointed toward a small clearing and the two of us sat down on a fallen tree trunk. I smiled as he draped his arm around my shoulders. The Stella Maris Chapel was partially obscured by golden leaves, as was the lake, and we strained to hear chatter from the distant crowds. Just as I had hoped, we managed to find a secluded spot within the congested trails of St. …show more content…
When I first visited St. John’s it was a place to make memories with my family. As I grew a bit older, I developed a serious love for photography while walking around the trails. Now, St. John’s also carries a greater meaning. It represents past and upcoming life changes. Since my very first visit, I have lost and gained friends and family members, have learned multiple tough lessons, and have determined who I am and who I want to become. I have gone through some difficult times, but so far I have been able to persist and come out stronger in the end. Though leaves may fall in autumn, they will always grow back during

It was an oddly quiet Sunday morning in the middle of December. Clear skies, forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains dominated the views from my front porch. The temperature was mild, one of those days you could wear a thin sweater and be a little chilly. There were no birds chirping or butterflies fluttering, as they had all left to the south to find a more suitable environment for them or died. I had missed this type of day when you could relax in the peacefulness of the quiet morning…

In The Bible Cause, John Fea explores the American Bible Society (ABS) and the plucky Christians who built and sustained it. Published to coincide with the ABS’s 2016 bicentennial, the book offers a chronological institutional history peppered with quotations from letters written by supporters (and occasionally critics) and tales from agents working across the United States and the globe. At its heart, this book argues that two motivating commitments have driven the history of the ABS. Since its founding in 1816, it has sustained a belief in the power of the Bible to lead people to salvation and has maintained a cultural mandate to build a Christian society in the United States and throughout the world.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…

There is a fine line between sex and gender. In fact, most probably do not even know that there is even difference between the two! People just assume a boy should act like a boy and a girl should act like a girl. Society forces us to think and behave that way. If you think about it when a baby girl is born everything is pink, but not all girls love the color pink. Society shapes the role of each child based on its biological sex. What happens if you do not behave like your sex is supposed to behave? In the article, “The True Story of Joan/John,” Joan does not act like the female that her surrounding pushed on her to be.…

    St. John's Relationship

In Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester is an emotionally intense and passionate man. In contrast, the Christian missionary St. John Rivers is cold and restrained. In life, where fire and ice are opposites of each other in many different ways, Rochester and St. John represent that relationship in their opposing features, motives, and reactions. One of the clearest examples of their fire-and-ice relationship is their individual motive for wanting to marry Jane. Rochester wanted to marry Jane for love, because he was “chained” to the lunatic Bertha. The way he declares his love is fiery and energetic, almost to the point of craziness. He states, “You – you strange – you almost unearthly thing! I love as my own flesh. You – poor and…

The first time I saw my dad in 3 years was at the Little Rock National Airport. My brother and I ran up to him excitedly from there began our voyage for 3 hours by car to my dad's house. We seemed to have driven all night, even though I was asleep half the time in the back seat of my dads truck. When we got to his house it felt like old times again. We did the typical boy things, riding quads spraying…

That day I wore a hat with a chinstrap and a light fall jacket that I always seemed to take off at some point before I returned home. That crisp autumn day, all of the neighbor kids went over to Mr. and Mrs. Ecuhers and brought along with them their rakes. Mr. Ecuher was a kind old man who had the biggest and oldest tree in the neighborhood. It was an ancient maple tree that looked like a sherbet popsicle when the leaves would change colors fading from red at the bottom, through orange, to yellow on top. Every year the neighborhood kids would go over to Mr. Ecuhers and make the biggest pile of leaves.…

A few days ago, I moved to Loonigon Street. It was named after a loony that lived here a few hundred years ago. On an autumn’s day, I went to a shop to buy some milk and bread, which will help me to know the way around my new neighborhood. As I walked on the sidewalk, I saw an entrance to a forest. I was curious so I stepped into the woods.…

Sun warmed her face, and her dull, brown eyes were cast in amber. The ice in her veins began to thaw. Approaching clouds dulled the brightness of the sun. Possibility saturated the air. Rose moved idly towards a cluster of trees. She adored the melody of the finches. A miserable grey painted a portrait against the soft golden light. To her right stood several senior boys. Finch Charming lazed among them. Finch was her ideal. Always laughing. He had it easy. A voice rang out, and summoned them. Rose and Finch glared apprehensively at one another. Rain clothed them. Rose welcomed the soft patter on her cheeks while Finch goggled at her. A laugh ran off her lips. She wanted to remember this. 87 spaces separated Rose from the date she had allowed herself. They sat with each other on the bus…

These pictures I took on Argyle Street, on Monday November 9th. It was a lovely day to go out and interview people for the speech project. I had an amazing day with my group. First, when we arrived to the street we went to a restaurant to have something to eat. At the restaurant we had a soup that was very delusions. After we ate, we went to interview people. I like that street. There are many cafes, restaurants on that street. On this street it was hard to find people for the interview, everyone was late for work or they hadn’t had time. I had an idea to find a park, because people in the park people always have time to talk. And we went to a park that was on this street. It was dog part, everyone there had a dog, and we interviewed 4 people…

Another time I went exploring was when my family and I went to downtown Rockford. We went to Rockford because my dad works out there and since the weather was beautiful we thought it was a good day to do it. When we walked by all the cute little stores we could all hear the splashing of the water hitting the rocks in the nearby river. After we were done shopping, we decided that it was a good time to eat some lunch. I knew that the pizza was going to be really good because of the smell of it. We followed the scent to the restaurant down the street. I had a fun time admiring the town and can’t wait to go back again.…

As I continue to sit on my front steps I notice that the leaves are changing colors and gracefully falling as if they are dancing. My mother decides to join me and have a little chat, “I don’t know what to do about your brother, I feel like I should give up but I’d be a terrible mom then again I’ve done all that I can.” She starts to cry as I just hold her and tell her, “We will figure it out, Mom.” I continue to hear the trees rustle like they are trying to talk to each other, but this time it’s like they’re arguing. That breeze rustles the leaves and makes my skin shiver — glad I brought my big cozy sweater.…

I make my way over the grass, which is covered in freckles of frost that make a soft crunch with each tiny step I take. The trees that surround me are clustered together in company, yet look lonely without their companionship of leaves. They stand tall and strong, like an army of ghost warriors that are ready for battle. I walk amongst them, lightly brushing against the rough and unkind bark as I go. There’s no sign of life in the park besides myself and the typical flock of gulls. I breathe in the nippy winter air through my nostrils, taking in the usual smell of gasoline and hot dogs. My feathers ruffle, as the light gust of cool air tickles me, making me look like a rabid animal. New Yorkers, both young and old, now jog past me with the reflection of the frosty sun glistening off of their foreheads. They don’t see me peering up at them in wonder, but I most definitely see them.…
