Wanderers V Norton FC

With kick off being an hour earlier than Norton were used to and not having a full compliment of players to choose from they warmed up and lined up for kick off with both managers on the pitch.

The team started well ensuring that that strength and commitment were at the forefront of the style of play being brought to the table; such style was optimized by the valiant efforts of Wilson and Jason, winning everything and ensuring Norton were well protected at the back. The center of the pitch was an unplayable surface so large parts of the game bypassed the midfield for offensive possession. Kunle and Karl were used to great affect, which produced a firm shot from Kunle with the keeper gathering well. Max worked tirelessly, chasing down all dispatched passes. Norton were caught on a break and found they were looking at a 1-0 deficit. This was something that the team had not faced this season and the remainder of the match would be a test of character to see how they dealt with such an instance.

With keeper Mel and midfielder Marty arriving late Norton now had a squad to rotate with. Mel was introduced.

The mood was somewhat subdued until it came to prominence that the mandatory Norton war cry had to been produced this game. The team gathered, hands raised above our heads and from the top of Tobrise’ lungs came the 1,2,3 NORTON!

The team re-entered the field of play with a combative spring in their step. Game started and shortly into the second half Marty had a moment of madness and gave a penalty away. Captain Callis ordered Norton to be on their toes for the rebound…his thoughts were not in

It is a loss they explain many ways. In the name of team play, there is no time or place for individual virtuosity, they say; it is a game now taken over by coaches, by technocrats and autocrats who empty players minds to control their bodies, reprogramming them with X's and O's, driving them to greater efficiency and work rate, to move systems faster, to move games faster, until achieving mindless pace. Others fix blame more on the other side: on smothering defences played with the same technical sophistication, efficiency, and work rate, but in the nature of defence, easier to play. Still…

Dempsey did not start in the match against Portland. He entered into the game, which was part of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, in the 71st minute. The match went into extra time, and trailing Portland 2-1, frustration overwhelmed the 32-year-old forward. “We improved a lot defensively over the three-days of camp,” Hodgson said. “We improved on our coverages and out play up front. The biggest thing early on is just knowing what we are doing and being in the right spots. Comminution is the biggest thing that we need to work in. If you aren’t communicating as a defense, you will not be in sync and everyone’s not reallying together. We have the athletes and the strength to make things happen, we just need to communicate a little better.”…

The team would always get there an hour early so we could stretch and hit in the cage. We were noticeably the best team in the tournament. As terrace regulars, it is recognised that everyone’s level of commitment and contribution to the NT is different. What is also recognised is that the North Terrace on game day when working as ONE can reach a level of strength & active support that is unrivalled on the Australian sporting landscape. Today is such a day.... The following outline the minimum level of support that we should all accept when standing under the North Terrace collective for 90+ MINUTES of football. • Respect the Capo(i) and listen • Know your chants (Pockets of confused but willing NT contributors dilute our strength, so time your entry into the NT carefully). • Show solidarity to the North Terrace community (crews, independents, front, back) • Be disciplined • Actively encourage those around you…

Another important moment of the formation phase occurred when the black leader (Julius) and the white team captain (Gerry) confronted each other about the fact that the white players were not blocking for the black players and vice versa. Since they were not performing well or running good plays, both Julius and Gerry agreed to make sure that everyone would play as a team. This quote from Coach Boone really sums-up their formation phase, “ If we don’t come together, you too will be destroyed.”…

The great thing about Lombardi was that the values he established and the vision he created were so strong that players could hate him, but still play their hearts out for him. Lombardi empowered his players to act, and whether they liked him or not, they played their hearts out for him. Lombardi understood the importance of influence. Maxwell shows us, “the true measure of leadership is influence; nothing more, nothing less” (Maxwell, 2007).…
