I asked her what she liked best about being a special education teacher. She identified the growth of her students as the most significant part of her job. I was very impressed when she told me about her first grader, who could say nothing but “mama” and “hi” last year, and this school year he has already been using full sentences, writing his name and adding. She expressed her great joy and passion for teaching kids with special needs by indicating that on days where students are celebrating their successes, she is celebrating even…

During the past 7 years I have had the opportunity to teach Students with Disabilities (SWD) at a high school level and also to train teachers, in my current position as a Special Education School Improvement Specialist with RSE-TASC (Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Center). Although the achievement gap is true for most student populations in NYC schools, the discrepancy is particularly daunting for the SWD and /ELL populations. In fact what we often find is that extraordinary numbers of ELL students are being referred to special education…

I am a witness to that statement because it helped my sons tremendously. They did not feel as if they were different and I saw an improvement in their behavior and grades. In the article by Rosalind & Joe Vargo, “inclusion prompted Ro's self-actualization, self-determination, and self-acceptance and her growing belief that there is nothing that she cannot do” (2016). Nonetheless, someone that may need special attention at schools need to also have the support of both parents or caregiver, as well as the teachers. Authors of School Inclusion and Classroom Management: Challenges and Possibilities, R. Carneiro, M. Acqua, and P. Caramori (2016), says, “it is certain that the regular teacher, that is not used to working with target-students from special education programs, needs specialized support for the implementation of adjustments to his/her pedagogical practice” (pg. 2039). The fact is there are many students that may need special attention and care. Therefore, with inclusive classrooms these students can feel like they belong because they do. With the resilience of the student, and the support of loved ones. The supported care of teachers and staff working together it is…

One of the first questions I asked of Ms. Jones was what did she see as her main role as a school counselor. I felt I had firsthand knowledge, because at my school each teacher of special education is required to carry a caseload of students. As case managers, we monitor their progress, grades, and assist them when problems arise along with insuring they graduate. Her answers mirrored my own personal experience in dealing with my caseload. Looking at the child as whole is vital to their success in…

As individuals with ASD grow and develop a natural need to ensure that they are socially included and not hidden away from society will come about and this poses a particular challenge as the general public, despite some change in attitude still have a long way to go. It is a known fact that individuals with ASD are often viewed simply as, badly behaved and having poor parenting. For the individuals with ASD the early stages of development require varying levels of support based on the severity of their ASD, however support may need to continue throughout their lives. This may be provided in varying forms such as Respite and Short breaks services, like those provided by my Local authority for example or in the form of sitting services, outreach workers and adult services etc. From early childhood the educational needs for children with ASD will vary and individuals will need a statement of special Educational Need (SEN), to receive maximum support in school, particularly speech and language therapy and social skills…

I knew he had a disability but I didn’t understand the true meaning of it. After taking this class and doing this interview, I definitely have more knowledge on different disabilities I never knew about before or was just uneducated about it. I got some advices, some feedback on her experience as a mother of a child with a disability, and definitely got some tips on the dos and don’ts when being the teacher of those kids. From what she has told me in this interview, I think that it is important to have an IEP for each of the student to record their progress. She definitely motivated me for the future of my classroom and I will carry her advices and her experiences with me…

I interviewed a teacher, Mr. Sameulson, from Stallings Island Middle School. He taught me a lot about his field through our interview in which we covered in the following: his background that prepared him to be the teacher he is today, how he educates students with disabilities, how common instructional accommodations help students, the goals that develop student academic independence and self-advocacy, the research-validated interventions Stallings Island Middle School offers, and how he feels about being adequately prepared for his teaching program.…
