Spartan Super Narrative
So far this year the only Spartan Super I ran was in Canada, so I was looking forward to this one and a chance to see many good New England friends. I spent the early AM on Saturday racing on Randall’s Island, NY and then drove over 170 miles to the Massachusetts venue to race the Super on the same day.

• Registration and Festival:

I arrived very late on Saturday so no one was waiting on lines at registration and it went fast and smooth. Sunday morning, I was at registration at about 8am and yet again I didn’t see lines or delays.

The festival area was set up well and everything was easy to either spot or find.

• Pre-race MC:

The Spartan MC at least on Sunday was John "JJ" O'Malley who is a former contestant on the TV show The Biggest Loser. He did a decent

I personally felt this year’s course spent more time and distance on terrain that was easier on the feet and at least for me, I was enjoyed that. The heat and sun was brutal, so any advantage racers gained due to the change in terrain was lost due to the heat.

The course was challenging and had several obstacles I haven’t seen Spartan use in some time. I wish Spartan would design a few new obstacles, and I am not asking for obstacles that only elites will mostly complete but some that would be fun for all racers, but to be fair, almost none of the obstacle races have added anything new in 2016. The staff, volunteers, and local police all did an amazing job both Saturday and Sunday on a hot and humid weekend. The bling is always top notch with Spartan as well, I wasn’t overly impressed with the MC, but I do love that he has a great story, so I won’t be deducting any score due to him. I rate this event/race a 4.8 out of 5

The Spartan Phalanx is a powerful painting created by John Becker depicting the 2011 Michigan State football players as warriors and as Spartans. In its description, John Becker explains that he wanted to create a picture showing the Michigan State football players as a phalanx in Greek marching formation. Long ago, the Greeks used that attack formation to strike fear into their opponents and to show off their organization and stature. I think that Becker was able to create that image by contrasting the vibrant green to the bland white of their pants which in effect, showed off the players’ extensively built bodies and contributed to their formidability. Not only do the colors add to this menacing effect that Becker creates, but the Greek formation…

Spartacus was an important leader in Rome. He was born in 109 BC and died in 71 BC on a battlefield near Petelia Italy. His occupation was a Gladiator. He is best known for leading a slave uprising against Rome. Spartacus was of the the Thracian nationality. He joined the Roman army when he was young. When he tried to leave the army, he was caught and sold into slavery. He was then forced to be a gladiator. A gladiator was a man trained to fight wild animals and other gladiators in an arena. In 73 BC seventy gladiators with Spartacus as their leader, escaped the gladiator school. They fled to Mount Vesuvius near the city of Pompeii gathering slaves and weapons. Rome sent an army of 3,000 men led by Claudius Glaber. Spartacus surprised the…

Oligarchy by Alyssa Raulerson An oligarchy is a form of government where a small group of people rule. Oligarchy originates from Medieval Latin and Greek. The Spartans were given command of the united Greek forces during the time of the Persian wars as they were seen as the more powerful military force in Greece. This was the first and last time throughout Greek history that would see the entire Greek world united (Brunt 1953). The Spartans upon hearing word that the Persians were advancing again decided against sending their entire army as it would’ve been seen as sacrilegious due to the Olympic festival being held at the same time. They realised that doing nothing would not be acceptable so they sent a small expedition led by Leonidas one of its kings, to block the pass until the festival was over and the main army could arrive to back them up. According to Herodotus the army led by Leonidas was also sent in the hopes to rally several of the other allied states into joining them in the defence. Leonidas himself believed that due to a prophecy the Spartans had received from the Oracle of Delphi (Rawlinson 1942 [7.220]) that he was going to die in this battle and thus was prepared to do so from the start. The courage and honor shown by the Spartans and its king leading up to the battle are worthy of mention, but the battle that followed is also an important part of the celebration in itself.…

    Spartan Warfare

In the 7th Century BC a new era of warfare strategy evolved. Before this new strategy, foot soldiers (known as hoplites) engaged in battle in the form of one mob for each army which on the command of their generals runs at each other and proceeds to hack blindly at the enemy with little to no direction other then to kill the enemy in front of them. This proved to be very messy and the tide of battle depended mostly on emotion and size of an army. In the name of strategy and organization, the phalanx was developed. A phalanx is simply defined as a line formation with its width significantly larger then its depth. The depth of the phalanx is a variable which some suggest was decided by the army itself rather then by the leaders of the army. The smallest depth appears to have been that of one man deep. However this was a unique occurrence which is widely believed to be fictitious. The largest depth is that of 120 men deep which was fielded at one time by the Macedonians. On average, the depth of the phalanx appears to be about eight men deep. During the time of Alexander the Great, the phalanx was believed to be eight men deep, but some argue that it evolved into a sixteen man deep phalanx. The Spartans purposely varied the depth of their phalanx so to confuse the enemy about the number of soldiers fielded. The phalanx proved to be a very valuable weapon for the military at that time. Armies which did not adapt to the phalanx formation were quickly slaughtered. The use of the phalanx allowed the Greeks to win the Persian Wars.

Many historians believe that the development of the phalanx led directly to social changes occurring throughout Greece during the time of the phalanx 's implementation. The phalanx formation allowed men to participate in the military who otherwise could not have because a much smaller investment in weapons and armor was needed to participate in the phalanx. The combined increase in the number of those participating in the army and the…

The decisive defeat of the Spartan hoplite army by the armed forces of Thebes at the battle of Leuctra in 371 B.C. ended an epoch in Greek military history and permanently altered the Greek balance of power. One by one, the old certainties of the 'Golden Age' of the fifth century had been challenged and overthrown, but the image of Spartan military invincibility had, until this moment, remained a secure bastion.…

The organizers were knowledgeable and included an off-road expert. They guided us through the trails telling us where to position our tires and how to navigate the terrain, and consequently made sure all of us felt safe in this new type of driving environment. This was so different than any other type of driving I’ve done in driving tours, rally’s or at a DE. I had fun and learned some things about my car that I didn't realize it could do! I now feel better prepared to drive my car in almost any type of situation that nature, adventure outings, or traffic could throw at me.…

I can say it has been over a year since I did my last amateur cross country race, between moving, family/work responsibilities and a self admitted laziness in actually getting my ass to a race early Sunday mornings when I could be sleeping in, I do, in fact miss this part of my cycling experience, therefore I am hoping to join in on the weekend racing festivities next spring when the local mountain bike series starts up again. Even though I have not done much racing lately, I have been doing plenty of riding and having a blast exploring all the sweet trails in my small part of the world. While writing this article on racing I was reminded of all the excitement, nervousness and unplanned chaos that comes hand in hand with weekend racing and…

Being a member of the ECXC team has been one of the best experiences I’ve had the pleasure of having and I consider myself lucky to have three cross country seasons remaining in my collegiate career. My freshman season, though very memorable and wonderful, flew by so quickly it was honestly unbelievable. I took many valuable lessons away from this season which I’ll carry with me throughout my career such as to have faith in my coaching and to trust my training. Also, I learned that to succeed and strive in this sport you must go the extra mile, not only while at practice but on your own too. Running isn’t just a sport, it is a life style. Though it was not always fun and games and definitely not easy at times I learned so much from my first…

The official wasn't much help, and after about five minutes we went to go get our numbers and tags for the race. My number was 145 and in big blue numbers. Then we went to the starting line. The mile run and 5K runners were both lined up in one massive hoard, all trying to get to the front, so they would have the best start. I tried to be in front of my family because I was the fastest.
