Spanish Conquistador Research Paper
The most delicious drink was found by Christopher Columbus, but it became popular because of a Spanish Conquistador named, Hernandez Cortez. What is this drink, you ask? No, it is not coffee. It is hot chocolate. In this paper, I will tell you how hot chocolate came to be today and why you need to thank Hernandez Cortez. I will also tell you how it’s different from history.
In 1519, Spanish Conquistador Hernandez Cortez saw King of the Aztecs and almost every single one of the Olmec civilization drinking a thick, brothy, brown drink. The Aztecs called it, “xocoatl” or as the conquistadors called it, “chocolatl.” The drink consisted of ground cacao beans mixed with chili peppers.
In 1502, Christopher Columbus came to America and stopped

Tequila is a drink which was associated with Mexican ranchers, cowboys and bandits. It is believed that the word ‘tequila’ originated from the ticuilas tribe which inhabited near a volcano bearing the same name located near the city of Tequila. There are many more theories of the possible origin of the drink. Tequila’s history is deeply rooted in Mexico’s heritage. Long before the natives were making a fermented beverage called “pulque” which was made from Maguey plant (variety of agave). It was considered a sacred dink. The transformation from pulque to Tequila happened in 1500s, when Spanish conquistadors ran out of their brandy; hence they started to distil this drink made from agave. This drink was America’s first distilled spirit known as mescal wine (also called agave wine). This spirit was evolved into Tequila. The name Tequila was given to the drink as the best quality blue agave plants are produced in the region of Tequila.…

    The Last Conquistador

In the movie The Last Conquistador, there is a controversy going on between John Houser, a sculpture who successfully attempted to create and mount the tallest bronze equestrian statue in the world, and people who funded the building of the statue and Native Americans living in Texas. The Native Americans don’t want the statue of a long-forgotten Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate, branded a terrorist and a genocidal architect by some, to be built. The Native Americans think that Juan de Oñate is anything to celebrate. He killed thousands of the Native Americans’ ancestors and took their lands. While the Native Americans have their points, Houser and his helpers are trying to help out the city of El Paso, Texas. El Paso Texas is one of the poorest cities in the United States. With Houser Building this statue, Revenue from tourists would help the city out. I honestly think that in this situation, everyone needs to understand where everyone else is coming from. The statue was not meant to be demeaning to the Native Americans in anyway and it is a beautiful piece of art that is very well sculpted. But then again, Houser should have done his research and understood how bad of a man Oñate was and realized that putting that statue up where eighty percent of the people living there are of Native American decent wasn’t a good idea. Even though the Oñate statue is beautiful, I believe it should have never gone up in the first place.…

According to the Boston Vanilla Company’s website, around 1000 A.D., the Totonaca tribe of southeastern Mexico was the only people to possess the special vanilla bean. Eventually, this changed. The Totonaca tribe was conquered by the Aztecs. They too, recognized the uniqueness of the vanilla bean. The Aztecs, along with the Totonaca tribe, thought “the vanilla bean was the food of the gods” (“Vanilla Beans”). Then, in 1518, the Aztecs were defeated by the Spanish Conquistador, Hernando Cortez (“History”). He was “served a drink of cacao flavored with vanilla called tlilxochitl” (“Vanilla Beans”). While being captivated by vanilla’s aroma and flavor, Cortez was determined to deliver this treasure to Spain (“Vanilla Beans”). “For eighty years, [only] the nobility and the very rich” enjoyed such an opulent and elegant drink (“History”).…

Up till centuries, Mexico was the only producer of Vanilla where only a bee found in certain regions of Mexico would pollinate the Vanilla flower. But, in 1517, when a Spaniard named, Hernan Cortes landed on Veracruz; he met Emperor Moctezuma (an Aztecs emperor) who served him a drink called tlilxochitl made by cacao and vanilla. Very soon after, he returned back to Spain in 1528 with vanilla and cacao. Because of price and rarity this unusual and pleasing drink vanilla became an exclusive club of the rich and famous of the time. Spain guarded the secrets of this drink for about 100 years. Unfortunately, though they tried to cultivate vanilla orchid in Europe, the plant would simply grow and flower, but no pods would grew because of the lack of the small bee native from Mexico and due to the fact that self pollinated vanilla flowers produces sterile seeds.…

It is said that the word ‘Cacao’ was corrupted by the early European explorers and turned into 'Cocoa'. Even the Aztecs, of Central Mexico, are believed to have acquired the beans through trade and/or the spoils of war. In fact, Cacao beans were considered to be so prized by Aztecs that they started using it as a type of currency. They also made a drink, similar to the one made by Mayans, and called it ‘Xocolatl’, the name which was later corrupted to 'Chocolat', by Spanish conquistadors. The further corruption of the word, which finally gave it its present form ’Chocolate’, was done by the…

In 1500BC – 400 BC, the Olmec Indians are believed to be the first to grow cocoa beans as a domestic crop. Cacao trees have grown wild for possibly 10,000 years. The Olmec civilization only lasted until about 300 B.C. In the 14th Century, cocoa became a drink that was popular for the upper class of the Aztecs; they called it “xocalati” meaning warm or bitter liquid. They were the first to tax the beans. In 1492, Christopher Columbus was said to have brought back cacao beans to King Ferdinand from his forth visit to the New World, but they were overlooked by the other treasures he had found. Somewhere around 1570, the cocoa gained popularity as a medicine and an aphrodisiac. Cocoa seed is used for infectious intestinal diseases and diarrhea, asthma, bronchitis, and as an expectorant for lung congestion. The seed coat is used for liver, bladder, and kidney ailments; diabetes; as a tonic; and as a general remedy. Cocoa butter is used for high cholesterol. Scientific studies into the medicinal properties of chocolate have unearthed a number of ways in which the dark beans may be able to stimulate erotic desire among humans. This was an aphrodisiac among mostly women. In 1631, the first publication of a recipe for chocolate is by the Spanish doctor Antonio Colmenero de Ledesma, based on the Aztec recipe. The bitter flavor is enhanced by adding almonds, anise, cinnamon, flowers, hazelnuts, roses of Alexandria and vanilla. The exact spices depend on the physical ailment. In 1674, was when solid chocolate was introduced in the form of rolls and cakes, and was served in chocolate emporiums. It was introduced in the form of pastilles. In 1765, Irish chocolate-maker John Hanan imports cocoa beans from the West Indies into Dorchester, Massachusetts, to refine them with the help of American Dr. James Baker. The pair builds America’s first chocolate mill and by 1780, the mill is making BAKER’S chocolate. In 1879, Daniel Peter and Henri…

Rationale of the Study Coffee and Milktea both have legendary past. Milk Tea, originally known as Bubble Tea or Pearl Milktea, came into existence in Taiwan, during the 1980's. From a tea shop called Chun Shui Tang in Taichung, Taiwan. Unlikely the fully loaded pearl milk tea today, the oldest form of bubble tea was made by mixing cold black tea with fructose syrup using a shaker. The product was named bubble tea after seeing the layer of foam that ended up on the top of the tea. Most bubble teas come with small chewy tapioca balls, commonly called "pearls" or "boba". The history of coffee began much later, dates back to the 1400s, when a shepherd noticed his sheep began to act unusually frisky after eating berries from an unfamiliar plant. Curiously, the shepherd picked one and popped it into his mouth. He was hyperactive as a kid. He told of his discovery of this stimulator to scholars, and someone makes a “tea” out of it. The story says that then one day someone dropped a bean into the fire by accident, and thus coffee was born. Today, different kinds of bubble tea are sold in different countries. For example, in Taiwan, there is a drink called “Rainbow Pearl Milk Tea” where the pearls are colored with natural food ingredients. In Vancouver, there are also many different combinations that you can make by adding different ingredients such as grass jelly, nata de coco and bite- size vermicelli into different drinks such as red bean milk, green milk tea, and taro milk tea just to name a few. These drinks became popular in most parts of East and Southeast Asia during the 1990s. 1|Page…
