Sonny Blues Analysis

After reading “Sonny Blues” by James Baldwin which is about a narrator who parents passed away while the narrator was in the army. Because of his years in the army he has not have a great bound with his little brother Sonny. After reading a newspaper; the narrator then discover that his brother have been arrested for using and selling heroin. Sonny moves in with his sister in law and after Sonny figured out he wants to be a musician, he made the decision to join the navy to leave the streets of Harlem. After the war Sonny did not immediately return home, through all the complications the narrator tries to cope and understand his brother in a different point of view. Some people may believe that the judge made the accurate decision by sending
Rehab not only keep the addicts away from drugs but also allow them to speak to other drug users who are going through the similar situations and also gives the users a since of hope and by receiving community service time, is a way to make the addicts pay for their crime without being locked behind bars. Even though Sonny friend believe that jail time is the best thing for Sonny and rehab was not an option as the friend stated in the passage “They’ll send him away some place and they’ll try to cure him… Maybe he’ll even think he’s kicked the habit. Then they’ll let him loose”. But with rehab his family will still know about his addiction and still be able to help him out and at the same time his brother has a better possibility of visiting him in rehab versus in jail where Sonny brother only wrote him once when Sonny niece Grace dies of polio which can also case a stage of depression because he wasn’t able to attend the funeral service, even though Sonny does not show affection towards his family but I believe he does care for their well
