“Sonny’s Blues” is a story of disorientation at first; it tells a story of a young man named Sonny and his older brother who is the narrator. Sonny is a young boy who in fact grew up in a world of abandonment. He suffered from drug addiction, being a school dropout, and personal desertion issues. As the story unfolds from his brother’s point of view, it explains how the older brother wished he had been there for his brother throughout his hard time of growing up.…

Amy in response to the first obstacle regarding supplies I think Sonny and his friends were resourceful in finding ways to fund their rocket projects. It was also awesome how the community stepped up to help the boys out. Let’s face it rocket building can be dangerous especially for a group of high school students. The dream Sonny had with the help of the community shows dreams can come true.…

He believed that Sonny was never in touch with reality, nor was he intrigued at all by Sonny’s ludicrous goal to become a jazz musician. It is not until the narrator decides to go watch Sonny play the piano at the nightclub that he realizes why Sonny loves to play and what exactly Sonny has been through. As a result, the narrator was able to experience Sonny’s life story through his music. “Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did”(275). Through Sonny’s music the narrator gains understanding in why Sonny was so determined and passionate towards becoming a jazz…
James Baldwin’s short story “Sonny’s Blues” displays a lot of take to heart messages that we could learn from. Throughout this story we got a firsthand look at what a teenager’s life in Harlem looks like. It is told from the perspective of Sonny’s younger brother who is an algebra teacher in high school. Towards the beginning of the reading the narrator expresses concern about the root issue contributing to Sonny’s problems; Horse, otherwise known as Heroin. He states “I was sure that the first time Sonny had ever had horse, he couldn’t have been much older than these boys now”, (Baldwin 22). This sentence makes a wide-spread drug problem in their community evident. As any writer does Baldwin…
The narrator of this story is Sonny’s brother. He knows the most about all the family and is best suited for telling the story. The brother is the one Mama told about their uncle and father’s tragic event. She tells him this so that he will take care of Sonny. This being said, he feels obligated to Sonny and his endeavors throughout life. His obligation is more of a guardian role than a brother. The brother’s knowledge of this event…
Sonny’s Blues shows a theme of salvation, or being saved. Not only do the two brothers need salvation from the world but they need salvation from their inner beings as well. Their world is filled with drugs, imprisonment, and the evil that resides around them. Salvation comes in many forms in this short story. The narrator is haunted by the thought of not responding to his brother, a failure that continues to haunt him because he denied all his obligations to his brother, Sonny and his dying mother. Also the death of the narrator’s daughter, Grace, is actually a form of salvation. It makes the narrator write a letter to his brother in search of forgiveness. This serves as salvation for Sonny who had just got out of jail, and wants to be…

When the brother came back from leave for his mothers’ funeral, he had sat down to speak to Sonny. When he found out that all he wanted to be was a musician, the narrator “couldn't see why on earth he'd want to spend his time hanging around nightclubs, clowning around on bandstands, while people pushed each other around a dance floor.” Sonny was “deeply hurt” when he realized his brother didn’t understand him. The narrator neglected his ways of thinking and thought he was experiencing adolescence. The narrator didn’t just neglect his ways of thinking for the future, but also never listened to what Sonny had to say about anything to try and better him. For example, he wanted to join the army or the navy to get away from the bad streets of…

After reading "Sonny's Blues", the first thing to analyze is plotline, which is the basis for every story we have and is what gets us, the reader, to pay attention to minor details in the story. With plotline, there are five areas where the story is separated, which are the introduction, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the conclusion. The story, "Sonny's Blues," begins with the exposition that sets the scene, introduces the main characters, tells us what happened before the story opened, and provides any other background information that we, the reader, need in order to understand the events to follow. The story opens with the narrator on a subway in Harlem, reading a newspaper article about a drug raid in which Sonny, his brother, was involved in. At this point, the reader is encompassed with so many questions as to why this is in the beginning of the story and why this is significant besides the fact that the article is about the narrator's brother. Then the story continues with the rising action where we, the reader, watch the unfolding of a dramatic situation where Sonny is involved in some kind of conflict. At this point, the reader learns that the newspaper article is not only about Sonny being involved with the drug raid, but that Sonny is going to jail for a heroine addiction. At this…
The changed relationship between the men and women in the movie is really interesting especially since this is such a faithful adaptation. So little is changed, it is almost as if it was written to be made into a movie. Changing the relationships between Sonny and his wife and Michael and Kay really serve no obvious purpose for the movie adaptation. It’s not any shorter or to the point. So then why was it changed? Was the director inserting his views about men, women, and penis size into the story? Were the women sidelined into the plot and treated badly (more than they already were in the book) to show how much power men hold over women and thus to gratify the male audience? Laura Mulvey’s theory comes in handy again when she says, “The…
