Socratic Seminar Format
Format for Socratic Seminar in Mr. C-D’s Class:

I know you have participated in Socratic Seminars in a variety of ways in your English classes. I go about it differently than you have experienced it in the past, I think. At the college level, I view the Socratic Seminar as an intellectual discussion/study group; students interacting with both the text and each other with the goal of preparing themselves for a culminating written assessment the following day.

As such, I do not grade by a rubric or check-off list for how many times you contribute. I do not have a list of questions for you to address. I do not have one question leader. I give a participation grade for the seminar. If you are engaged- both physically and intellectually,

The Socratic Seminar that took place on November 13 revolved around the idea of three different topics from different essays. The first essay, “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, talks about the author’s personal experience as an Indian boy who taught himself to read. The next essay, “Consider the Lobster” by David Foster Wallace, revolves around Maine’s annual Lobster Festival and what a lobster is. The final essay, “Making Toast” by Roger Rosenblatt, is about a grandfather losing his daughter and how their family works through it. While reading and annotating the essays, I had no clue as to what the connection was between the three articles. Kevin had mentioned the loss of connection between the articles during the Socratic Seminar, as he…

You will be provided with formal feedback by way of a grade only. You cannot ask for, or be given, a mark for this piece of work; the rules and regulations of the University do not permit us to do so. (You will receive an overall grade for this module only after the meeting of the Board of Examiners; the Board meets only once a year, in July.) This feedback will be given to you within twenty-five working days of the deadline, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the School (which apply to all items of coursework, regardless of module or level). Although your work will not be returned to you, you may like to discuss your skills and abilities further. If so, then you should arrange a meeting with the seminar leader (or the module leader if your seminar leader is not available). If you wish to discuss the actual work (or, in the case of Task 1, your performance) itself, you will need to bring along a copy of your coursework (you should always keep a copy of all work; we expect students, especially in this discipline, to keep accurate and full records!). You should note that your seminar leader will not be permitted to tell you what marks were awarded for each section, or the final mark given for this item of coursework. However, discussing your work in detail, via a one-to-one meeting,…

The first closed-ended question I have is: Does decision making related to psychology? The answer is definitely yes. Because in the first video David Redish said that : “Whether you are talking about neuroscience, psychology, or behavior economic, or robotics, they all come up with the same type of decision”. David Redish has studied the dynamic of brain and behavior, he has also published a book, he know this adequately. In my opinion, decision making is closed linked with brain and psychology, every behavior or decision that human made in daily life is strongly connected with our cerebrum.…

The Socratic Seminar was an educational and enlightening experience. Before the day of the seminar I was a bit apprehensive and was not sure whether the class, or I for that matter, would participate much or learn much. After the class I felt great about the experience and learned a lot, it was good to have a conversation with my fellow classmates about the story in a relaxed atmosphere. I was confused on several aspects of the story and wanted to discuss several topics such as Dexter’s motives during his attempted journey into Judy’s heart. Overall I felt that the Socratic Seminar was a great experience and I learned more about the story than I initially had by simply reading it.…

Us humans use a lot of fuels during the day, food fuels and mechanical fuels. Each gives us energy to power through the day, mechanical fuels to cars and food fuels to our bodies. When being compared they have some similarities and differences. Obviously the main and most distinguishable difference is the fact mechanical fuels are used for cars and food fuels are eaten by us to give us energy. So they seem completely different right? But exactly how different? Our human body runs like an engine, give us enough gas (food fuels) and we can go about our day and run with no problems.Start cutting back on gas and our bodies start to break down. So comparing us to a car, we aren’t so different. No, this essay does not allow you to start drinking gas, but it may want you to start rethinking your eating pattern.…

My score was 45 out of 75. The assessment score indicates that I am not as good of a listener as I think I am. The area I need to focus on is learning how to be more attentive when listening. It also says that I need to focus more on a person when they are talking and allow them to finish their ideas without interruption.…
