TOPIC NO. 1
EXPLAIN HOW YOU DEVELOPED AN APPRECIATION AND UNDERSTANDING FOR THE FIELD OF SOCIOLOGY AND DISCUSS THE FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIOLOGY, AS THEY RELATE TO YOUR CULTURE AND STYLE OF LIVING.
Well sociology for me at first sounded interesting because I have not studied sociology before and it is a new thing for me. The thing I’m most interested in sociology is the study of different cultures relating to my own culture. Sociology has helped me a lot in understanding many things about culture and norms of different society. At first I was hesitant because from what I know American culture is very bad but as soon as I understand more of it I have found a new appreciation for it and also my international classmates help me understand their culture as well. Adapting and learning from others for me is very significant in relation to sociology. Because if you narrow your mind that the only culture that is best is your culture then you will be wrong about it because for me different cultures has a negative and positive side to it so by understanding it from other point of view is good for me. The culture that I was brought up with has something in common with American culture. But still not everything is similar to American culture and I believe that my culture is more conservative than the American culture.
Now I have a full appreciation with sociology and I am interested in studying it more in depth. I am just fascinated with how different people act according to the culture that they have been brought up. As I look back to my own culture, I understand that through the study of these things I further understand why there are some individuals who act differently even though we have the same culture, the factor that is affecting these is how do they interact with different individuals through the society. Culture is a very big foundation of sociology, from these different types of beliefs, norms, and perspectives are born. My culture has given me the appreciation for many things such as the elderly, respect to a person older than you, and respect to people who has authority. Also not just only culture, there is the family who is imparting to me these things. The family is the key component of every society for in the home is where I child will be nurtured and raised up to be a certain individual. Sociology has given me anew perspective on such things, before I thank for granted some things that my culture has given to me but as soon as I understand how other cultures are I am thankful that in my culture there is something good to be proud of.
The appreciation and understanding of sociology has deeply impacted me in a way that now a have a deeper understanding of not only my culture but other culture as well. Having this will help me view the culture and norms of others to be same as mine but in a way different. I have developed a new perspective on viewing others point of view as a different one but I need to first understand where are they coming from. Different cultures of course have different views on things so a misunderstanding is inevitable. But as the one who now have a deeper understanding on how things work on other cultures I should be able to minimize the collision of different cultures by trying to meet them halfway and explain the difference of my culture to them so that both parties will not be offended. By studying and learning the fundamentals of sociology I now know that everyone has something to say for him or herself and not everyone has a same point of view of many things. Every individual has a different perspective in life, some maybe similar but similarities change in every society as well. I am very happy to have learned these things and to be able to know things that are taken for granted everyday.
