Social networking is the process of finding friends and managing friendships through the Internet. Those who wish to meet others online put up their most compelling and attractive presentations through their profile pages. They join various groups that meet their interest and communicate by commenting topics therein or by simply introducing new topics related hoping to encourage discussion. According to Danah M. Boyd and Nicole B Ellison (boyd, d., & Ellison, N. (2007))“social networks are web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded

Lipa City system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection and view and traverse their list of connection and those made by others within the system.” This can be seen on the various social networks available on the Internet, such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and many others. In this paper, I will explain the history of social networks, the advantages and disadvantages of such sites and where I stand as a social networking person, although I favor social networking sites.

Lipa City

Dedication I dedicate this research paper to my professor Dr. Minerva Apita as Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements in Social ScienceI, and to my parents who taught me that the best kind of knowledge to have is that which is learned for its own sake, and taught me that even the largest task can be accomplished if it is done one step at a time.

CHAPTER 1
Background of the Study

Introduction
The first hint of social networking websites was witnessed in the year 1997 through formation of a certain company called Sixdegrees.com. This company was the first of its kind; it allowed user to list their profiles, provide a list of friends and then contact them. However, the Company did not do very well as it eventually closed three years later. The reason for this was that many people using the internet at that time had not formed many social networks hence there was

Lipa City

little room for maneuver. It should be noted that there were also other elements that hinted at Social network websites. For instance, dating sites required users to give their profiles but they could not share other people's websites. Additionally, there were some websites that would link former school mates but the lists could not be shared with others. (Cassidy, 2006)
After this there was the creation of Live Journal in the year 1999. It was created in order to facilitate one way exchanges of journals between friends. Another company in Korea called Cyworld added some social networking features in the year 2001. This was then followed by Lunar Storm in Sweden during the same year. They include things like diary pages and friends

Lipa City lists. Additionally, Ryze.com also established itself in the market. It was created with the purpose of linking business men within San Francisco. The Company was under the management of Friendster, LinkedIn, Tribe.net and Ryze. The latter company was the least successful among all others. However, Tribe.net specialized in the business world but Friendster initially did well; this did not last for long. (Cohen, 2003) I define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.

Lipa City
The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site.
While we use the term "social network site" to describe this phenomenon, the term "social networking sites" also appears in public discourse, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. We chose not to employ the term "networking" for two reasons: emphasis and scope. "Networking" emphasizes relationship initiation, often between strangers. While networking is possible on these sites, it is not the primary practice on many of them, nor is it what differentiates them from other forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC).
What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals to meet strangers, but rather that they enable users

Lipa City to articulate and make visible their social networks. This can result in connections between individuals that would not otherwise be made, but that is often not the goal, and these meetings are frequently between "latent ties" (Haythornthwaite, 2005) who share some offline connection. On many of the large SNSs, participants are not necessarily "networking" or looking to meet new people; instead, they are primarily communicating with people who are already a part of their extended social network. To emphasize this articulated social network as a critical organizing feature of these sites, we label them "social network sites."
While SNSs have implemented a wide variety of technical features, their backbone consists of visible profiles that display

Lipa City an articulated list of Friends1 who are also users of the system. Profiles are unique pages where one can "type oneself into being" (Sundén, 2003, p. 3). After joining an SNS, an individual is asked to fill out forms containing a series of questions. The profile is generated using the answers to these questions, which typically include descriptors such as age, location, interests, and an "about me" section. Most sites also encourage users to upload a profile photo. Some sites allow users to enhance their profiles by adding multimedia content or modifying their profile's look and feel. Others, such as Facebook, allow users to add modules ("Applications") that enhance their profile.

Lipa City
The visibility of a profile varies by site and according to user discretion. By default, profiles on Friendster and Tribe.net are crawled by search engines, making them visible to anyone, regardless of whether or not the viewer has an account. Alternatively, LinkedIn controls what a viewer may see based on whether she or he has a paid account. Sites like MySpace allow users to choose whether they want their profile to be public or "Friends only." Facebook takes a different approach—by default, users who are part of the same "network" can view each other's profiles, unless a profile owner has decided to deny permission to those in their network. Structural variations around visibility and access are one of the primary ways that SNSs differentiate themselves from each other.

Lipa City
After joining a social network site, users are prompted to identify others in the system with whom they have a relationship. The label for these relationships differs depending on the site—popular terms include "Friends," "Contacts," and "Fans." Most SNSs require bi-directional confirmation for Friendship, but some do not. These one-directional ties are sometimes labeled as "Fans" or "Followers," but many sites call these Friends as well. The term "Friends" can be misleading, because the connection does not necessarily mean friendship in the everyday vernacular sense.
The public display of connections is a crucial component of SNSs. The Friends list contains links to each Friend's profile, enabling viewers to traverse the network graph

Lipa City by clicking through the Friends lists. On most sites, the list of Friends is visible to anyone who is permitted to view the profile, although there are exceptions. For instance, some MySpace users have hacked their profiles to hide the Friends display, and LinkedIn allows users to opt out of displaying their network.
Most SNSs also provide a mechanism for users to leave messages on their Friends' profiles. This feature typically involves leaving "comments," although sites employ various labels for this feature. In addition, SNSs often have a private messaging feature similar to webmail. While both private messages and comments are popular on most of the major SNSs, they are not universally available.

CHAPTER 2
Review of Related
This chapter contains the review of related literature of the study and thejustification of the conceptual and research literature gathered from books, journals, researches and online sources.
A. Conceptual Literature
Social networking sites have added entirely new meanings to interpersonal interaction and community. It is the interplay between internet and real life communication and its subsequent effect on interpersonal relationships. Popular social networking websites such as Facebook have bundled many of

Lipa City the internet communication standards such as e-mail, forums, and instant messaging into one resource. However, its usage has become a staple activity in a young adult’s life. While it varies slightly among gender and race groups, overall, young adults (college aged)who have internet access use Facebook regularly for some type of social contact. With this mass assimilation into daily life, it has already begun to change the way in which interpersonal relationships are defined. It is one of the, if not the top medium for young adults to “scope out” and “research” potential partners. With Facebook playing a large role in many romantic relationships, it’s important to see how this will continue to shape interpersonal communication in the future. The importance of this research proposal is to look at how Facebook is an extension of real life.

Lipa City
B. Research Literature
According to the youths of Brgy.Poblacion, there are some reasons why an individual uses asocial networking site. The first reason is for them to meet strangers and becomefriends with them. This type of relationship is what we call a weak interpersonalrelationship.
Throughsocial networking sites like facebook, the user tends to maintain his weak interpersonalrelationship with his online friends because of an easy communication. He/she can useprivate messaging, chat rooms, and other method of communicating provided by thewebsite. On the otherhand, a strong interpersonal relationship with his offline friendsneeds time and effort to be maintained.

Lipa City
Distance between two users that can change an offline relationship into onlinerelationship is also a reason why an individual uses SNSs.. With the use ofprivate messaging and chat rooms of this site, youths can communicate and maintaina healthy relationship with their friends from far places with ease that takes only a fewseconds to complete it.
Social Networking Sites also have negative effects in offline relationships. Somethings found in the site can lead to misinterpretation for some people. Because of onlinemessaging or comments that are visible to everyone in the friends list of a user, anoffline relationship can be affected or destroyed due to fights that will happen. For example, a jealous boyfriend saw a comment from a mysterious boy posted on the wallof his girlfriend that says intimate words, because of this,

Lipa City the relationship between thegirl and his boyfriend can be broken. Another negative effect is, because of postingcomments on the wall of a user became much easier, it will also be effortless for otherpeople to spread rumors and gossips that can destroy a life of an individual.
As a larger percentage of communication moves into the digital arena, we willsee a general weakening of ties between people. This weakening will be less pervasiveamong a person’s closest circle of friends and more obvious among lesser friends, asdigital communication will become the primary mode of communication in theserelationships.

Lipa City
C. Justification of the Study
This related studies and concepts helped in determining the advantages/disadvantages, effects, and importance of social networking sites on the interpersonal relationship of youths in Brgy. Poblacion, Balete, Batangas. There were some studies conducted that dealt with social networking and its effects towards teenagers in different aspects. Interpersonal relationship, particularly that of youths in Brgy.Poblacion, Balete, Batangas , isn't one of those aspects, although some of the aforementioned studies have tackled somewhat similar aspects to that of the one being studied on by the researchers.

CHAPTER 3
Research Design and Methodology
This chapter contains Research Design, Research Instrument, Personal Data Sheet, Method of Investigation and Procedure.

A. Research Design
This study used descriptive research design. It involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition, or processes of phenomena. It focuses on prevailing conditions or how a person, group, or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast.

Lipa City
I used the survey technique which is under descriptive research design. Survey technique, requires gathering of facts that requires sufficient and accurate interpretation. This technique is used to collect demographic data about respondent’s behavior, beliefs, opinions, interests and the like and then the gathered data are analyzed, organized, and interpreted.
B. Research Instrument
As a researchers I used questionnaires and survey forms as research instruments. The survey form asked if the respondents are using social networking sites and their advantages/disadvantages, effects, and importance of using the sites. After determining those who use social networking

Lipa City siteseveryday, the questionnaire asked for the profile of the respondents and the status of their interpersonal relationship with their family, friends, teachers, classmates and others.
C. Personal Data Sheet
As a researchers I distribute a survey form to each youths in order todetermine the users of social networking sites and must be accomplished within two tothree days. After thatI collected the survey forms, a list of the respondentswhich are SNS users will be organized then copies of the main questionnaire will beproduced. The copies of the main questionnaire will depend on the number of therespondents. However, extra copies will be reproduced if some respondents loss theirquestionnaires. The respondents will be given two to three days allowance to answerthe main questionnaire. An

Lipa City officer of each section will be selected to distribute andcollect the questionnaires. Once the deadline of the questionnaires arrived, theresearchers will coordinate with the officers to retrieve all the questionnaires completely. The questionnaires gathered will contain all the needed data for the study and it will beorganized, summarized, analyzed, and interpreted.
D. Method of Investigation
As a researcher I used purposive sampling. This sampling method includedrespondents that fall under the purpose of the study and others that are not useful forthe study are positively excluded. The study focused on the effects,advantages/disadvantages, and importance of SNS to them.

Scholars have long recognized the potential of Internet-based communication technologies for improving network research—potential that, to date, remains largely underexploited. In the first half of this paper, we introduce a new public dataset based on manipulations and embellishments of a popular social network site, Facebook.com. We emphasize five distinctive features of this dataset and highlight its advantages and limitations vis-à-vis other kinds of network data. In the second half of this paper, we present descriptive findings from our first wave of data. Subgroups defined by gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status are characterized by distinct network behaviors, and students sharing social relationships as well as demographic traits tend to share a significant number of cultural preferences. These findings exemplify the scientific and pedagogical potential of this new network resource and provide a starting point for future analyses. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.…
