1) The cold war was a period from 1946-1989 when there was tension and hostility between the communist Soviet Union and its allies as well as the capitalist United States and its allies. The war began after the success of their temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the USSR and the US as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences.
2) a) Communism was considered a threat to democracy because communism complete opposite of capitalism, any threats against democracy were a threat to everybody. Many Americans feared a combination of both nuclear war and a Soviet takeover of our country.
b) The groups that came under suspicion of being communists were union leaders, artists, peace activists, intellectuals. The actions taken towards these people were that they had to go to court and appear in front of the committee. During the hearing, the suspected Communist was pressured to talk about his/her political beliefs and activities. Then they were asked to provide the names of other people who had taken part in the allegedly rebellious activities. As well, any additional people identified in this manner also received court appearances, widening the committee’s search

a) NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was a mutual defence organization set up to protect several Western European countries, Canada, and the U.S. from possible aggression from the U.S.S.R after the Second World War
b) NORAD stands for North American Aerospace Defence Command. It was a defence agreement signed in 1958 between Canada and then United States (known as the North American Air Defence Agreement Until 1981)
c) DEW stands for Distant Early Warning. It was radar stations in northern Canada set up between 1959 and 1960 to detect Soviet activity over the North Pole.
4) The commitments Canada made as a member of NATO were keeping a full army brigade, several air squadrons in Europe, to build and supply military bases overseas. They also had their ships and aircraft track the movements of the Soviets submarines and had their men participate in military exercises with allies. They most importantly had to adapt to the defence policy of those of its allies. Canada’s involvement in NATO made it very hard for them to maintain an independent foreign policy

As the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, he developed a close relationship with U.S President Ronald Regan; both men shared a similar conservative philosophy. As Canada’s Prime Minister, Mulroney sought closer ties with the United States, on issues such as trade policies and North American Aerospace Defence Command system (NORAD). The Cold War was a state of political, military, and economic tensions and hostilities between the Communist World, primarily the Soviet Union, and the Capitalist Western World, the United States and its allies. The Cold War lasted over 40 years because the beginning and ending of it leaves room for some debate. Some sources say it started in the mid to late 40’ after the Second World War while other historians date it back to 1917 with The Bolshevik Revolution and ending in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In that case the Cold War then lasted for over 70 years. The periods when tensions were at the most high were from the late 40s to the 70’s. The international incidences of particular note that brought things to the boiling point were the Berlin Blockade (‘48-‘49), the Korean War (‘50-‘53), Berlin Crisis (‘61), the Vietnam War (’59-’75), and the Cuban Missile Crisis (’62). There were points, like the Cuban Missile Crisis, were the United States were very close to engaging in a nuclear war with the Soviet Union and its allies. The Cold War spread at home too during a heightened state of fear and panic called the Second Red Scare. This lasted approximately 10 years from 1947-1957 during a time when the country was worried about national and foreign communists taking over society and the federal government. Anyone, from actors to politicians, and just the ordinary working class person accused of any communist ties, could lose their job, property, and face imprisonment even with lack of proof or evidence to support the claims.…
