“Something’s are just wrong”

In "Some Moral Minima," Lenn Goodman argues that there are certain things that are simply wrong. Do you think Goodman is right?
One of the most controversial subjects is that of pornography. So many people argue over whether or not it should be legal. I would agree that something’s are just wrong, however is is really our place to attempt to force others to live according to our beliefs? I think trying to force our personal beliefs on others is wrong. If the United States was run this way this would be a socialistic country.
“Some have argued that the production of pornography involves the exploitation and mistreatment of women; thus, consumers of pornography support an industry that harms women. This may be true, but it has little bearing on restricting the rights of adult access to pornography. Many people work in industries that involve serious threats in hazardous situations: coal miners, electricians, and farmers, among others. To argue that pornography should be highly regulated, or censored, because some people have been mistreated in its production is the same as arguing that restaurants should be closed because some restaurants have had health code violations.”
As it says in the text above many people may argue that porn is something that encourages the mistreatment of women. In some circumstances I would agree. Some pornography is done forcefully and both parties are not willing. I will fully admit that these types of videos are floating around the internet and it is unfortunate. However, I will also argue that many videos are consensual sex between equal parties and I do not think that this is wrong in anyway. If some people wish to view these types of vidoes, I do believe that they should have the right to view them. Pornography should be regulated as it is to protect the youth of America, however in no way should it be made illegal. This is one example of something that people argue that is “just wrong”.
People share differences of opinion and in some people’s eyes this might be wrong, but who are we to tell others the things that they should and should not watch?
Another big issue in America today is the restrictions that are and are not placed on gun ownership. Many people argue that more restrictions should be placed while others fight to protect the rights given to us by our forefathers through the Constitution of the United States. I am one of the latter. I believe that we should be able to freely own guns. The reason we have the right bare arms is in case the government becomes corrupt as the crown was to the colonist. This way we have the right to overturn the government if the time ever came that it was needed. While there are people who are getting guns who are using them for negative things, people will always find ways to get the things that they want. Remember the prohibition. The consumption of alcohol was illegal, yet people found ways to get it. If you illegalize everything that has the possibility to be negative thing our freedoms would be completely wrong.
“The Constitution of the United States—specifically the Second Amendment, which outlines the specific right for the people to "keep and bear arms"—is quite clear. That right simply cannot be infringed, or taken away. Just as the other rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights are guaranteed by the Constitution—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly—the right to keep and bear arms cannot be taken away from the people who live under the Constitution and its amendments (which includes, of course, the Bill of Rights). Fundamentally, there is no further argument needed: the right to keep and bear arms is a constitutionally protected right, and that is sufficient to establish that there should be few restrictions on gun ownership. Any such restrictions on gun ownership would have to meet the kind of requirements one might put on free speech: an overriding public interest, where the good of the vast majority of the public requires some restrictions. But those restrictions must be absolutely minimal and must be shown to be absolutely necessary. Both the law and common morality have found, in very few cases, a need to limit free speech: generally in order to guarantee public safety. In the same way, any restrictions on gun possession must be shown to meet that very high standard, and to be an unavoidable threat to the general public without those restrictions.”
What it comes down to is this. If you do not like something don’t do it then, but we have no right to tell people that what they can and cannot do. This is a direct infringement on our constitutional rights.

The moral argument must be addressed before an examination of the effects of pornography usage. Pornography usage cannot be rightly argued as morally bad/evil. For an action to be classified as morally evil, there must be proven, an initiation of force. By this definition, it is easy to see why one cannot paint all pornography, everywhere with the same broad brush. A mutually consenting adult couple filming their private acts and distributing them can scarcely be lumped into the same category as child pornography. Even if we look at the usage of morally neutral pornography, can we equate somebody consuming it once a week to someone consuming it once a day?…

It is my feelings that pornography should be censored and no it does not violate the First Amendment. I am not as well versed on the Constitution of the United States as I would like to be, but I do know that the First Amendment is intended to allow freedom of religion, the right to exercise that religion; freedom of speech, individual or the press; freedom to peaceably assemble; and the freedom to petition the Government for any grievances. I also realize that amendments are subject to interpretation, and some court rulings of the years have altered the actual interpretation of this amendment. The intended purpose was to protect individuals and groups from persecution for practicing their beliefs. Society as a whole has put limitations on…

When discussing the “XXX” industry, otherwise known as pornography or the adult film industry, people tend to discuss it in hushed tones, or rather not discuss it much at all. When it comes to sex in general, America generally is uncomfortable talking about sex and topics related to it. It should come as no surprise that the porn industry is treated in a similar fashion. Pornography, according to Sullivan, was considered “sexually 'explicit' writings, still or motion pictures and similar products designed to be sexually arousing,” (Sullivan, 2012, pg.321).…

Looking into the arguments of Lenn Goodman that there are certain things that are simply wrong, there are some who would definitely agree, yet there will be a few that would present a logical argument that would contradict his arguments. In this article Catherine Mackinnon is speaking from her point of view on Pornography. In her article she uses political aspects to further her argument on pornography. Ans2) Though writer talks about some feminists who try to censor pornography that appeals to some heterosexual adult male but, in last two paragraphs she discuss about the television and children. Yes, in my opinion second last paragraph about television and children are connected with Jacoby’s overall argument. This is because, she relates the feminist porn opponents. She also believes that pornography is more harmful to women then other forms of hate or offensive speech. She disqualifies the “kiddy porn” argument as kiddy porn being an issue of child abuse, not an issue of free speech. She argues that women’s reactions to the same nude pictures are as varied as the women themselves. A main argument made was that censoring of porn could lead to the censoring of other women’s issues. She is even worried that if these kinds of issues are ignored or considered as a part of first amendment, the serious issues of women, such as; rape and other vital issues of women could be censored.…

There is no universal definition for the interpretation of the First Amendment in which every single American can agree upon. It was created with the basic understanding that everyone share the same rights. Trying to appeal to feminists that pornography is protected under the First Amendment is almost an impossibility. Susan Jacoby refers to the feminists as a social group entity that wants to use their powers of the state to try and change what has not been able to be changed. She believes feminists lack any real rational reason for the censorship of pornography and that it is wrong simply because they say it is. In the eyes of feminists, all types of pornography will undoubtedly lead to violence, destruction, and the immoral downfall of mankind, as we know it. Evidently, feminists understand the viewpoints for all women and know exactly what is good and what is not for them.…

This is viewed as too broad and vague by the Free Speech Coalition. Under Miller v. California pornography can only be banned if it is considered obscene and without redeeming social value or rather if it would offend the average person. The problem with the CPPA was that even film and art, for example ideas produced centuries ago would be considered a violation. According to the First Amendment there is a difference between actions and words; although, certain categories of speech are protected especially those concerning children, those protected categories were not included in the CPPA. The speech used in the CPPA was not remarkable enough to persuade others to break the law; therefore, it cannot be banned. Because the language used was much too vague it was ruled that the prohibitions of the CPPA were overboard and…

It is imperative to understand the theories and perspectives in order to explore the morality or immorality of pornography. Theories that touch on ethics include utilitarianism, deontology as well as ethical egoism just to mention but a few. Ethical theories attempt to explain the rationale behind people’s actions especially when distinguishing what is right or wrong. Analyzed from the perspective of ethics, Pornography, considered the one of the oldest professions, prostitution and other acts of pornography, is an art form that ancient civilizations drew on walls, therefore, considered moral. Specifically,…
