President Bush's announcement on June 6, 2002, to create a permanent Cabinetlevel Department of Homeland Security, has catapulted the future of the beleaguered Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) into a higher orbit of uncertainty. The historic proposal, delivered to Congress on June 18, 2002, would merge a dozen agencies, among them the INS, into the new department. In announcing the plan, the President vowed that "this great country will lead the world to safety, security, peace and freedom." Bush explained that the reason for creating the new department was not to increase the size of government, "but to increase its focus and effectiveness."…

British literature is filled with puzzling, yet captivating stories set during the fictitious times of King Arthur of Camelot and his Knights of the Round Table. The medieval poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is, unquestionably, included in this category. The poem gives an organic message through the connections between humanity and nature, portrayed in the mystical Green Man. The story seemed to depict many pagan and Christian symbols and they seem to be of high importance in the poem. There is a constant mention of God, the celebration of Christmas in Camelot and a knight trying to keep his vows which are similar to Christian beliefs. Other elements also play a role which can hint towards being either Christian or pagan:, the spring of holly in the Green Knight’s hand and even the pentangle in Gawain’s shield. Both Christian and pagan beliefs are ensnared in this poem and different elements which have a religious association might as well be a product of paganism.…

» The McCarthy hearings were trials in which Senator Joe McCarthy accused government employees of being Communists. He exaggerated and exploited the evidence and ruined many reputations. Blacklists were created and many employers refused to hire the suspected or accused. (If they did then they would be accused.) Due to the exaggerated evidence and the seriousness of the charges, the hearings struck fear in many Americans. Although at first popular, the public began to wonder how far it would go. After McCarthy accused the U.S. Army of housing Communists, his committee began to go down hill. The army strongly defended themselves as they sought to end McCarthy's "witch-hunts." In November of 1954 the Watkins committee censured McCarthy under two counts. The Senate voted to "condemn" him on December 22, 1954. This censure ended McCarthyism but could never undo all of the damage that it had caused.…

This image, was made by a man named Phil May. This cartoon was in ‘The Bulletin Magazine’ on the 21st of August. 1886 with the title ‘The Mongolian Octopus’. On one of the tentacles it says customs robbery and shows a customs office. Another one says opium and shows someone smoking the drug. Others say things like cheap labour and bribery even immortality. All of these suggest that the Asians have brought over these terrible things. It suggests that they rob Australians and that if they get rid of the Asian migrants all their problems will be solved. The head of the Mongolian man is very big and shows him scrunching up his face almost like he is deliberately bringing these awful things to Australia to make us look like a bad country.…
