Sleeping is a state when our body relaxes the most, all the motor activity and senses are suspended when we are asleep. Although when sleeping we look inactive, some functions of our brain and body are actually more active when we are asleep. During sleep there is a lot going on in your body and that is why sleeping is as important to your health as eating healthy and exercising. There are several reactions caused by lack of sleeping time, such as insomnia, chronic insomnia, and unproductive day.

Not having enough sleep is not always caused by an undisciplined sleeping time; it could also be caused by insomnia. This is the most common sleeping problem that most people suffer. Insomnia is the inability to get the amount of sleep that you need, it is measured by the quality of your sleep. Many people think that insomnia is a sleeping disorder; insomnia is more accurate to be a symptom of another problem that differs from person to person. Drinking too much caffeine before you sleep are one of the simplest form of insomnia and some emotional issues such as stress, anxiety and depression (Saisan, Smith, Robinson, and Segal, 2013). Difficulty of sleeping, having trouble getting back to sleep, waking up too early, waking up frequently during the night this are some of the symptoms of insomnia.

Chronic insomnia can contribute to serious health problems; some of them are stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some heart related problem (Beckerman, 2013). This serious health problem has been research and it showed that most people with these health issues has insomnia. This shows that our organs need rest and some of them need to be activated during sleep. Researchers have also studied that trouble sleeping would lead you to die from heart attack. There are so many effects that lack of sleep gives to your body; some effect can even be visually seen from your appearance. Puffy eyes, dark circle, weight gain these are caused because when your body doesn’t get enough sleep they releases more stress hormone and the growth hormone are not release. From those effects we can conclude that sleeping would also shorten your life.

Lack of sleep would interfere with your activities, work, school, driving and even social functioning. In addition, lack of sleep also played role in human error, tragic accident like car accident, nuclear meltdown and aviation accident has also happen because of sleepiness. For students with sleeping problems it may interfere with the way their brain process information

The reason we experience all these health problems that are related to sleep loss is not entirely known by the scientist. Though scientists still debates the function of sleep, it is clear that lack of sleep is associated to physical and mental dysfunction. You may not realize of what your brain and body are doing when you are sleeping, but sleeping time is vital to your ability to function and to your life (Matta, 2013). If you still think that sleeping is a waste of time, this fact should change how you think about sleeping

While many don’t know it, sleep isn’t just mental, sleep is a factor that is also connected to our immune system. In the book Sleep Thieves, our immune system is proven to be more active while we are asleep and can be disrupted of its normal response pattern with loss of sleep (Coren 171). With less sleep, it puts us at risk for disease or sickness because by losing hours of sleep would result in a decreased immunity to illnesses. In addition, a Doctor named Damien Leger was apart of the US national commision of sleep disorders. He created a report full of findings in 1988 where he obtained information of resulting incidents from sleep deprivation.
