Setting, historical and social context
According to the analyzed context and it’s details we may consider that the action may take place in a country house of a rich and noble family somewhere in Australia or New Zeeland in the end of XIX - beginning of XX century.. Firstly Katherine Mansfield born and brought up in colonial New Zealand (could affect the setting ). Secondly in a text we can notice the word “Verandah” which has featured quite prominently in Australian and used in residential particularly terraced houses in Australia and New Zealand)
Narration, point of view
Mansfield wrote "Sixpence” in limited third-person narration. It is limited in that the author presents the thoughts of Dicky only, but in the last third of the story can see into the mind of the father in particular, following his thought blaming himself that he has whipped ‘his little man’. (inner monologue). The personality and outlook of the other characters reveal themselves through what they say and do.
The story is told in direct speech.
Generally speaking, the style of this text, is ironic; it is characterized by a sensitivity to mood and emotions, of her characters,their actions and solution of the “problem of behavior”
The plot of the story is simple and realized through the problem of children with “awkward age”, the punishment ( whipping) and father’s inner experiences.
Imegery
The author used colourful adjectives to create imagery; for instance, to describe Dicky are used such adjectives as ‘sensitive’, ‘affectionate’, ‘obedient’, ‘marvellously sensible’
Structure
The text structure is based on 5 elements:
• the opening(exposition), where the author describes the main character the boy Dicky, his mood, his behavior ;
• rising the action. Here we see the situation during the children tea, when the boy put the large bread plate on the head and take a knife showing that he is a soldier to his sisters.
