Sinkholes
Sinkholes- QuestionsON THE LINES
1. In what type of terrain are sinkholes usually found?
Sinkholes are usually found in areas that have karst terrain. Another word for karst is porous rock.

2. Explain how a sinkhole is created.
Sinkholes are usually created by the water that flows beneath the topsoil. Then acidic water flows down to the bottom. The acidic water erodes a lot of rock underground and cave systems are formed. Eventually, the weight from things above ground becomes too much for the land to handle and it collapses and caves in.

3. In which parts of the United States are sinkholes common?
According to the article, many sinkholes occur in Florida. When I researched sinkholes that occur in America, I got quite a few results for sinkholes in Louisiana.

4. How can human activity and natural phenomena trigger a sinkhole to form? Explain.
Human activity speeds up the process and triggers sinkholes to occur. For example, a farmer might be pumping water from underground, out of the ground. This means that there is no water pressure to hold up the land and it will speed up the process of a forming sinkhole.

5. List at least three warning signs that indicate a sinkhole might be about to form.
-There might be a circular crack in the ground or a bathtub-like impression
-There could be trees or fence posts that tend to sag.
-Rainwater could be collecting in rare or unlikely places.

6. What can be done if a developing sinkhole is detected? Explain.
If you can tell that a sinkhole is starting to develop, you can get specialists to fill the sinkhole in with like solid grout or cement. Dirt isn’t used because a sinkhole is a conduit -which means that there could be electrical cables in it- to an underlying aquifer- a layer of earth or rock that allows water to pass through or that contains water.

Earthquakes develop in the crust of the earth. The inner parts contains a lot of energy. Some of this energy can escape through cracks which can cause volcanic activity, but most of it is stored within the earth’s inner part, contained in the crust. The earth’s outer crust has rough edges and lines making it look a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. The energy stored here causes the pieces to slide, glide, knock and move around each piece. These pieces are also known as tectonic plates.…

Sinkholes are a part of the slow, natural process of erosion in Florida’s limestone terrain that occur over thousands of years (“How”). Sinkholes occur in Florida because much of the state’s land sits on soft limestone that is susceptible to dissolving, creating sinkholes. The whole state of Florida sits on top of thousands of feet of carbonated limestone, but the region where most sinkholes happen is the west-central part of Florida.…

Many places in the city have been measured at 17 feet below sea level, making New Orleans one of the lowest inhabited spots in the United States of America. It is continuing to sink at an estimated rate of about an inch per year. This sinking is due to several different factors. The flooding of the Mississippi river has been controlled by levees since the late 1800’s. The river used to leave sediment when it flooded. When levees were put in to prevent flooding, the delta downstream was starved of sediment and nutrients. This sediment that the Mississippi river brought during floods used to settle and make more land over time. The sediment also used to formed a buffer between the city and the water whenever storms or hurricanes came towards the city. Due to lack of sediment deposit and formation of new land, Louisiana has lost almost 2,000 square miles of land since the 1930’s (217 of those miles were because of hurricanes Katrina and Rita). Despite the negative results to the land from the insertion of levees, the american government has continued to handle flooding in New Orleans the same way: building the levees up a little…
